Hi,

Looking to switch to +10 offset wheels (17x8") from the factory +55 offset machined alloy TRD wheels.

I watched a few videos and spoke with my mechanic:

Disadvantages I know so far:
-increased stress on wheel bearings and tie rods
-decreased turning radius (as a result of the scrub radius changing)
-decreased MPG (due to aerodynamics of increased frontal surface area)
-Increased paint damage and dirtiness
-increase road noise

I am wondering if these issues are more serious with more negative offsets, and if so, will the +10 be okay in terms of these disadvantages or should I look for something more like +20/+30?

Thanks all!

another impact of positive scrub radius... steering wheel feedback from bumps.

+10 is a pretty significant change from stock +55, and from the trd upgrade wheel at +45.
Yes, the Pro and Trailhunter come with a +20 and I don't know it to be true, but I've been assuming that Toyota builds those models with suspension that creates a scrub radius close or the same as what we would get on an ORP with +45 (or 55). Would love to know if that's true, but without having an answer I'll assume it's true for my own decisions.

I don't think anyone or any article will definitely tell you how much wear to wheel bearings and other suspension points, how much steering effort increases, or whether you'll be find the increased steering wheel feedback acceptable with a given change. I'm sure it all varies with the type of driving and type of terrain you'll be on.

I personally made the decision by asking myself whether the extra stance vs the +45 option was worth the potential early wear of bearings and suspension and the cost of that repair. I'm going with the TRD upgraded wheel at +45 with a beefier tire. I looked at a bunch of pics and it gives me enough of the look I'm after without being concerned about early wear and/or ride quality.

small note...you can decrease scrub radius by increasing tire height, so if you're doing a lift as wheel and putting on more rubber, you'd reduce some of the scrub radius created by going with a lower positive offset wheel. I put a chart up on this forum that shows scrub radius of different wheel offset and tire size options. Search "Comparison" if you're interested in looking at it.
