<200 miles; Multiple Faults: CEL, Drive-Start Control Malfunction, System Malfunction, and Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction

Hi all,

My SR5 4x4 was delivered on Wednesday. It still has less than 200 miles. I was parked on a hill this evening. I then started the truck, put it into Drive, and then put my foot on the gas and the truck rolled backwards. I slammed on the brake, put it in Park, put it back in Drive, it lurched a bit, and it started driving normally. However, soon after, the following warnings came on the dash: Check Engine Light, Drive-Start Control Malfunction, System Malfunction, and Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction.

VERY frustrating on a brand new vehicle. Any ideas of what went wrong? I'm going to be making a dealer appointment tomorrow morning.

With all those failures, possibly a bad PCM.

I got a CEL and Drive-Start Control Malfunction after accelerating hard to merge onto a highway in my new Sport Premium. Only 1500 miles in. Pulled codes and came back with O2 sensor failures. Took it to dealership and they confirmed and replaced upstream O2 sensor.

I'm back from the dealership. I thought I'd provide an update. The dealer pulled the following DTC codes:

P08BA71; P0741; P07407F; P08BB; P281671; P271371; P2714; P0796; P079571.

Many of these are also referenced in the tacoma TSB (t-sb-0076-24) that guided dealers to replace the transmission.

So....it looks like I'm in for a transmission replace......GREAT.

I did have a great experience at Westbrook Toyota in Connecticut. They put me in a 6th gen loaner TRD ORP, and were generally sympathetic.

I'm now thinking about if I should lemon law the car/have toyota buy it back, or go through with the transmission replacement and then keep it. I'm not sure if the replacement transmission will have the same issue down the line??

Should be a pretty straighforward swap. If I were you I would ask toyota for an extended warranty which they will give you after this and then drive your truck and forget about it.

Has to be in the shop for a certain amount of days before you can do lemon law from what I remember. Hopefully they replace it quickly because that sucks to have that happen on a new vehicle. Hopefully you can get some sort of extended warranty out of it too

Adding another update from today. I picked up the 4Runner from the dealer today. Toyota's troubleshooting procedure called for the tech to look at the transmission fluid level. The tech noted that the fluid was 1.5 quarts low. The tech topped off the fluid and did three test drives across a total of 40ish miles. The codes did not come back.

So...let's see. Maybe the transmission doesn't need to be replaced. I will report back.

keep us posted. If yours has low oil, so do others. I wonder if that might be the cause of the hard shifts when the car sits for lots of us.

really cant lemon law a vehicle if they fix the issue. only if it goes in multiple times for the same issue and it cant be resolved can you lemon law a vehicle.
