Updated with details/feedback:

This is only my second trip to Moab. On my first trip I took a Ram 1500 Rebel and stuck with easy stuff. I've got a lifted Jeep TJ, but I don't like the idea of driving it all the way to Moab for a number of reasons (otherwise, it's pretty much built out for Moab-like wheeling). I'll be able to compare my Jeep and 4Runner more closely on local (northern Colorado) trails as the trails open up (after snow melts). But they're different beasts for different purposes, so I'm not sure how valuable comparisons are (still interesting to me though). My plan is to stick with 5/10 rated trails and below for Moab trips with the 4Runner (for now at least).

Not that I have a hell of a lot to share now, but I had zero slip going up and down baby lion's back on my first pass. I think there was a little slip on the second pass because I was screwing around more, but nothing major. Just a tire and acceleration thing, not a 4Runner thing. I was at 20 PSI in MTS rock mode and tried with and without crawl mode. I'll need to play with crawl mode a little more before I judge it. As predicted, the cameras were pretty damn cool going up baby lion's back. It can be unnerving not being able to see over your hood in that type of situation, so the cameras make the experience 10X better. I was in 4L of course. I also locked the rear diff, although I probably didn't need to in that situation (might be a bad idea on that hard surface too, but I wasn't sure how slippery it would be). We're going to be on a lot more trails in the next couple days and I'll try to get some video when we come across cool parts.

FWIW, I had my son film this so I could see how the suspension reacted. I thought others might find the video kind of cool though.

This is the first privately owned 6th gen 4Runner I've seen make a run at Moab 👏 Any feedback to share? Have you been up there with previous off-roady vehicles? How does this compare?

The TFL guys did this part in their ORP (search for TFL offroad in youtube). They also did some other Moab trails and I've seen some videos posted from others too. I'm not sure what counts as privately owned. I know a lot of the youtube guys buy vehicles just to produce content, which seems like a cool job, but I'm guessing the perspective on owning the vehicle is a little different. For example, the Westcott Design guy (Jeff?) just did a video talking about taking his modified '25 ORP to Mexico and beating the living hell out of it. Not something I would do after spending $60K but I'm glad others are putting these things to that kind of test for the rest of us to learn where the breaking points are.

Been considering driving out to my in the next few days or weeks, after seeing the TFL stuff, I’m interested to check it out myself and ironically enough their offices are right down the street 😄

Thanks for sharing and your feedback. Your son did a good job filming. Nothing like a multi generational off-road outing to get them off their phones/devices (well besides the filming part ;)) and into a hobby like cars, off-roading, camping.

Doing it stock also is pretty cool. Do you have plans on adding wheels/tires or any other mods in the future?

Ya some of my best childhood memories were from outdoors roadtrips and camping trips with my parents. I blame my truck addiction on them!

@dirtwheeler thanks for documenting your ownership experience so far for us owners to be to experience vicariously. Especially appreciated your Observations After 200, 500, 1000 miles threads.

I'm definitely getting better tires by next winter. I'm probably getting skid plates and rock rails within the next couple months. I'm still thinking about tire/wheel size, offset, and possible lift options versus keeping stock for safety and mpg on road trips. I'm also thinking about upgrading the roof rack and getting a roof top tent. My considerations include balancing expenses for this vehicle, versus my old jeep for off-roading, versus buying a more trail ready platform for these kinds of trips.

May I recommend Sherpa for your rack system? ;)

Loving what's coming of this next week!
