Hi all. This is the first forum I’ve ever been a part of. I know there’s rules and maybe I’m already breaking some unintentionally. Please forgive me if so.

I picked up my 2025 4Runner TRD Pro in the middle of April in Oregon. Immediately loved it. I think it’s worth mentioning, this is the first 4Runner I’ve owned. I drove it back to Washington state with no issues, just enjoying the drive.

Fast forward to roughly 1,500 miles, I was driving up to a traffic light and my vehicle shifted HARD. To be honest I don’t remember if it was upshifting or downshifting, I just remember it happening two times back to back and saying to my wife “I hope that never happens again”. All seemed to be fine for a couple weeks, although I really only drive it on weekends as I have a work vehicle. Then one day when I was slowing down it downshifted extremely rough from 3rd to 2nd gear. After that it started happening fairly regularly. Every time I would drive it, it would happen at least once. I was parking it backwards in my driveway, which has a slight incline, meaning my front end was pointing downhill. After parking it in a level spot while out running errands, I noticed it shifted just fine on the drive home. I thought maybe that had something to do with it for some reason.

It seemed as though I had ever so slightly figured out a minuscule part of the problem. But then when out on a drive on a windy road, almost every single corner I’d slow down for, it would downshift violently, to the point my tires screeched on the road. It’s almost painful every time it happens, partly due to the fact I just spent $85k on this brand new vehicle, and I know this certainly can’t be good for my transmission.

It’s probably worth mentioning, when shifting from park to first gear, the whole vehicle would lurch forward, or backward, seemingly only when parked on a decline or incline. Not so much when parked level.

I noticed when I put it in sport mode, it ALMOST completely rids the problem, but still doesn’t completely eliminate it. This leads me to believe something is essentially “confused” about what the transmission should be doing at any given point in time.

I’ve taken it to the dealership and they were absolutely zero help and couldn’t even diagnose it. Scheduled an appointment at a different dealership, just praying they’ll actually be able to resolve the issue, although I’m not holding my breath.

All that to say/ask, if anyone else has experienced anything like this, and if so, any ideas or remedies for said problem? Thanks in advance, and sorry for the lengthy post.

I’m in a TRD Pro. I’ve got 1,000 miles on mine so far and I haven’t experienced this.

I have a TRD Pro on the way. That seriously scares me to hear what you are experiencing. I would think that the dealership would flash your computer and update the transmission software. I remember reading about other manufacturers having good results with a transmission flash or update. If you don't have any resolution, I would consider the OTT Tune to see if the fixes the issue and actually improves it over stock. You could always return it for a refund if you don't get the results you are looking for.

I think you’re fine. They have not had any QC on the Pro. I have a Pro. It’s also a Hybrid. So there is a good change when your starting off either going it’s figuring gas or hybrid…

I don’t experience violent downshifts but I definitely have awkward/clunky downshifts when slowing down and pulling up to a stop light. The transmission holds the gear for way too long and when downshifting from 3-1 it will hold until like 800rpm before finally downshifting.

this transmission is definitely taking me some time to get used too. I feel like the tourque converter locks up immediately and stays locked which can cause a bucking sensation.

Nothing is wrong with the Pro Models, I also don’t think the TrailHunter has had any mechanical issues. People gotta stop complaining about things. It’s getting ridiculous. Absolutely I’d be upset IF mine had a problem. But I also understand that this model is the first of the new generation. So that’s why we all have a warranty?

pretty valid concern especially considering all the transmission issues with the Tacoma.

TRD Pro with about 1200 miles on the clock here. Mine has not done any of the violent downshifts described above and typically has been shifting very smoothly as i've was pretty gentle on it for the first 1K miles due to that old school "break in" mentality. This last weekend we took it on about a 200 mile road trip for some camping and at one point we drove up to about 10,000' elevation and i had a couple downshifts coming back down on windy roads that, at the time, i felt were noticeable but nothing out of the ordinary. Could have just been the windy road or the way i was braking as it was pouring rain at the time.

I'd say your best bet is to continue to try and recreate it at the dealership until they take a deeper look if it continues to concern as at the end of the day thats likely the only way any issue is going to get resolved under warranty if there is something going on.

I am at 3000 miles on my pro and have been driving since first week of April! I have not noticed anything like this, but I definitely feel your concern. That being said I would get it looked at. I have a 75 Bronco with a six speed electronic transmission with a quick shift six controller and it is amazing how easily you can program your transmission and shift points . Which makes me think it could be something as simple as just reflash your transmission control at the dealer.

What an interesting response. I’m truly glad you’ve had no issues with your Pro. To discount someone else’s experience with theirs, especially when you haven’t driven or ridden in it, is pretty wild. Again, I’m glad yours has had no issues, I hope it stays that way. Mine most certainly has a transmission issue. The warranty is great yes, if they actually preformed any work at all on my 4Runner. They have not, other than telling me what I already know: it has a transmission issue.

I’m glad you haven’t had any issues worth concern. Thank you for your response, I appreciate it!

What have they told you in terms of addressing the transmission issue(s)? Have they given you a loner since you are unable to drive your truck?

Thanks for your response. As I stated, I’m very new to 4Runners, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’ve never done much more than things like replacing brakes, oil, easy things. I hope a flash or update will solve the problem.

Nothing more than “they found that there is in fact a problem with your transmission”. They did not offer a loaner vehicle as I did not leave my vehicle with them. I told them I wanted it back due to the fact that there was zero communication with me over the course of 8 hours. I also called to offer some information I forgot to share with them that I believed could help them diagnose the problem and they dodged call after call after call. I’m trying a different dealership tomorrow.

That's crazy. I also bought my Pro in Oregon and live in Washington. I've had great service with Rodland Toyota, not sure how close that is to you.

Is the truck showing any error lights on the dashboard?
