That's crazy. I also bought my Pro in Oregon and live in Washington. I've had great service with Rodland Toyota, not sure how close that is to you.

Is the truck showing any error lights on the dashboard?
I tried calling Rodland Toyota but they didn’t answer and gave no call back after providing my contact info to the robot/AI. I’m taking it into the dealership in Puyallup tomorrow, which is far more inconvenient than Rodland as I’m located in Snohomish. No error lights whatsoever.

You're going all the way to Puyallup, from Snohomish? There must be 20 Toyota dealerships closer than that? I would just drive to the closest one and talk to them. Surely that would make more sense than driving 3 hours roundtrip in horrible traffic with a jacked-up transmission?

I agree that other dealerships closer to me would seem to make more sense. However, the only dealership, other than Michael’s Toyota of Bellevue, that has answered my call and spoken with me, is the dealership in Puyallup. A couple coworkers told me they’ve dealt with them directly and had great experiences. From what I’ve read regarding other, more local dealerships, their service departments are seemingly just as bad, if not worse, than Bellevue. I just want this issue resolved sooner rather than later. If that means a lengthy drive there and back, I’m more than willing to do it.

Have you had any mechanical issues resolved quickly with a more local dealership? Or has your experience with Rodland just been something simple, such as an oil change? Genuine question.

Nothing is wrong with the Pro Models, I also don’t think the TrailHunter has had any mechanical issues. People gotta stop complaining about things. It’s getting ridiculous. Absolutely I’d be upset IF mine had a problem. But I also understand that this model is the first of the new generation. So that’s why we all have a warranty?
Just because someone is stating an issue they are experiencing, does not mean they are saying its a widespread issue and dosen't nullify their experience. I don't think anyone here is complaining...

Yeah, my 2018 Pro had the broken coil issue (like they all did), and the parts took 6 weeks to get, they put me in a Rav4 (no charge) and kept me informed every step of the way.

They also fought Toyota for me when my Sienna broke an oil cooler hose, another well-known issue, even though we were well out of warranty (by years, but not miles).

I was able to speak with someone at Rodland this morning and they were miraculously able to at least take a look at my 4Runner today. I’ll post an update after they (hopefully) resolve the issue.

The fact that dealerships are showing their lack of expertise on this new complex architecture is not giving me warm n fuzzies. Perhaps keeping my good ole faithful is in the cards.

Crazy enough, we drove up to Dicks in Edmonds for lunch, and I went to back into a spot so we could eat out of the sun, and when I shifted into reverse, I thought the transmission was going to fall out of the damn thing, I couldn't believe how hard the slam was when it shifted.

Weird.

I’m really hopeful that was a one time thing, but I fear it wasn’t. I’ve read a couple other posts of something similar happening to a few other people. This never happened to me, even with the other issues, until recently, when I returned home, came to a complete stop, put it in reverse to back into my driveway, and it slammed into gear after a second or two of seemingly searching for it.

I stopped at a gas station on my way to drop it at the dealership. When I returned to my 4Runner, I started it, and put it in reverse without putting it in sport mode first. The vehicle lurched backwards. I put it in park, switched to sport mode, waited a couple seconds, put it in reverse, and it shifted into reverse smooth as butter. Interesting.

Pro Owner here, sorry for your problems, it sux putting this type of coin out to have a bad experience.

Toyota better get on the ball with some training on these new models because as far as I've experienced at every dealership or tech I talked to is they weren't even as knowledgeable or familiar with even basic functions with these than I am. I swear I taught half the dealership about the features on the thing.

So far no weird shift issues. But now that I read your last response it got me thinking.

I automatically always put it into Sport before I back out of my driveway, is that masking a potential problem?

I want to say I'll not put it into Sport to test it out but I may just wait until they figure this out as I don't want to jinx myself.

Good Luck, and please keep us updated.

OPs issue sounds like a real problem. Mine was only $65k, but I’d be asking for a loaner.

Sounds like some people are switching drive modes pretty regularly. I’ve only switched mine a couple times and felt like the transmission needed to “re-learn” my driving behavior after switching modes. My wife’s MDX feels the same way. It’s like it hiccups at times, but eventually gets back in a groove with consistent driving.

I completely understand why you wouldn’t want to risk “testing” it for the sake of your transmission. I can’t recall if I always put it in sport mode for the first few weeks or month I drove it. I think I did though because one day I accidentally cleared the history of my average MPG so the next time I drove it it read somewhere around 14 MPG. I figured I’d keep it out of sport mode at the least, not going so far as to put it in eco mode, to see if I could get my average MPG up quickly as I wasn’t quite satisfied with what I was seeing. That’s around the time I started noticing significant problems with my transmission if my foggy memory serves me correctly. I wasn’t paying much attention due to the fact I didn’t think my brand new 4Runner would have a problem such as this.

As I stated when replying to Mudbath, I dropped it off at a local dealership today. I asked if he had any type of time estimate and he told me probably most of the day. I dropped it off at 10:30am. I asked for updates, he said he’d provide me with one. I heard nothing all day so I called around 5:30pm, 30 minutes before they close. Left a voicemail and thankfully this guy actually returned my call after hours. He told me they’ll keep it overnight and they need to contact Toyota tomorrow morning to get, what I assumed and suggested, and he confirmed, is guidance, due to the vehicle “being so new”.

I’m not thrilled that I received no update, especially since my vehicle will stay there overnight, outside, in a not so great city, mainly because he led me to believe it would be ready for pickup before they closed. He did return my call which is better than what I experienced at the dealership I visited prior.

I’m not so confident they’ll get it sorted any time soon but I will definitely keep everyone updated.

I learned, after purchasing my Pro, that these transmissions are “learning transmissions”. It gave me hope that maybe this was all it was, it was just learning my different driving habits. A few hundred miles later, the violent downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st started happening. That’s when I knew without a doubt, there’s a much larger issue. Usually the first few hundred feet of driving, after initial startup, it will “hiccup” slightly. I could live with that if that’s all it was, unfortunately it’s not. I hope you don’t have any issues more than just a hiccup from time to time!

OP I've been talking about this with the wife for awhile now and she didn't believe me.

Currently around 1500 miles on a Limited Trim in the Northeast, no mods, I do change drive modes regularly, and experienced a couple bad lurching issues over the past 2-3 weeks. When I park the car it's usually on an incline and I've noticed that if I use certain drive modes OR my custom one (sport steering, power and comfort suspension) it will struggle to find the right gear to go up my driveway.

Resulting in lurches forward like the car doesn't know what to do. There are other moments where I feel like tapping on the throttle hasn't really provided me with the power I was looking for, but I can't tell if that's me being used to a GTI throttle or if there's just an odd transmission play.

That said, I do drive quite a bit of city miles and lots of times they're simple 15-20 minute runs. There's no issues on longer road trips, but the local driving is where this issue really gets to me. Hoping this gets resolved/someone figures it out soon!

TRAIL HUNTER owener here. Mine has similar issues. When I put it in reverse it struggles to go back as if its trying to find the right gear. In a way it giggles back and forth until I stop, change it to park and THEN it will work.

My car has 3700 miles, I noticed the car struggles changing gears at the very begging of the drive. However it is less likely to occur if I warm the car for a few minutes and then go. Issue arrives when the vehicle is super cold.

I did read in this forum someone's transmision got damaged during a hard shift, the vehicle then completely stopped working including the hybrid system.
They then reported after a dealership trip, not enough transmision fluid was placed from factory and now a new transmision is needed.
