OP I've been talking about this with the wife for awhile now and she didn't believe me.

Currently around 1500 miles on a Limited Trim in the Northeast, no mods, I do change drive modes regularly, and experienced a couple bad lurching issues over the past 2-3 weeks. When I park the car it's usually on an incline and I've noticed that if I use certain drive modes OR my custom one (sport steering, power and comfort suspension) it will struggle to find the right gear to go up my driveway.

Resulting in lurches forward like the car doesn't know what to do. There are other moments where I feel like tapping on the throttle hasn't really provided me with the power I was looking for, but I can't tell if that's me being used to a GTI throttle or if there's just an odd transmission play.

That said, I do drive quite a bit of city miles and lots of times they're simple 15-20 minute runs. There's no issues on longer road trips, but the local driving is where this issue really gets to me. Hoping this gets resolved/someone figures it out soon!
I really hope you’re not experiencing the same issue I am, but it sounds pretty similar, unfortunately.

The latest update from my advisor at my local dealership, where I dropped my 4Runner on Tuesday, is they contacted an engineer at Toyota and the engineer advised them to reset the transmission so it can begin to learn driving habits all over again. The tech drove my 4Runner today and stated “I’m not convinced this will fix the rough shifting.” He implicated to my advisor the vehicle is still shifting very poorly. They reached back out to Toyota for their next direction but did not receive a response before the end of their work day.

I have a really bad feeling my 4Runner will be with them for weeks, possibly months, until they can figure it out. There goes my trip to Idaho. Really hoping they don’t just swap the entire transmission as I have no idea if parts will even be available.

I'd be having a loaner until they straighten it out, and not some econo box. No way would I accept anything less with a brand new vehicle.

yea I dropped my car off at the dealer today. They gave me a loaner. No issues with getting one.
I’m supposed to get an update today, but I’m anticipating no progress so I’ll request a loaner at that time.

Please keep us updated with what your dealership is able to find out. I’d assume they’ll go through the same process as the dealership I went to, but maybe the engineer they contact will have a better idea of what the problem could be.

I did not. According to my “advisor”, the tech drove it and said it did not fix the issue. They’ve had my vehicle since Tuesday.

Sooooo yay and Nay

I had a great tech, more than 20 years of experience. He did explain to me the transmission is really reliable, its been used in other models for the past years. Such as the avalon and camery. However the motor might be building up a different pressure so there is a mist match with the trans when building pressure from the turbos.

I dropped off the car the day before so he could test it in the morning since thats when the issue happens. I did inform him of some of the issues in this forum as well. Failed transmision due to low transmission fluid and hard shifting. I have only experienced the hard shift.

Issues reported to him:

-Hard shifting when starting the vehicle from a stop during the morning

-Shifting knob wont change to drive or reverse some times. I have to keep trying until it does.

-When in reverse car struggles (feels like your breaking back and forth as your reversing).

-Pink tint on back up camera sometimes when close to objects.

-Android auto would disconnect randomly.

Results:

-Issue was replicated (hard shifting when starting to drive). He mentioned another vehicle did the same and hoped to look reproduce the error again at a later time with a vehicle right of the delivery truck.

-Shifting knob he could not replicate but was really concerned about it and would check again.

-For android auto, he mentioned it could be the charging pad thay results in the constant disconnect and would try to update the software once I take it back. Consultant did tell me its a common issues in toyotas.

- Camera issue could be due to the software trying to adjust the image based on the environment. Similar to a night vision camera.

Summary:

He wants me to do some more driving over the weekend and record more possible problems. Move the phone out of the charging pad to see if it still disconnects. Also to record if my back up Camara still gets that purple tint color when baking up and to see when it happens, meaning what type of weather.

I will be dropping off the car Monday so he can test as much as he can Tuesday and wednesday. I had such an amazing experience with them, no one else is allowed to touch my car but that tech.

Dude that's awesome to hear! Nothing beats a great experience with a tech. Truly provides ya with some peace of mind.

Def let us know what they find out with the additional testing and fixes? Not sure if I trust any techs near me just yet

Update as of yesterday, good and bad.

Good news is, Toyota is not going to make the tech working on my 4Runner jump through anymore hoops or go back and forth with trying different things which could take weeks if not months. They advised him to just replace the transmission. I’m also finally getting a loaner/rental today, which to me, implicates this could take quite a while.

The bad news is, they don’t know when they’ll have a new transmission in their hands to install in my 4runner. Toyota also doesn’t want me to take my vehicle back and drive it while we wait for the transmission, in case I create damage to the vehicle before the transmission swap. Seems kind of interesting since the tech has now driven my vehicle just under 40 miles, which seems excessive to me. I also asked my advisor, “isn’t this causing significant damage to my transmission every time it’s driven without the issue being fixed?”. His response was a simple “no, nope”. The other bad news is they were unable to diagnose the root of the problem which makes me question whether replacing the transmission will actually solve anything. Especially after reading what donayre21’s tech told them.

My advisor told me my vehicle is an isolated problem, but from the sounds of this thread, that’s not true. Hopefully there’s just a few of us that were unlucky.

I should receive an update on Monday with an ETA on the 15 new transmissions that are supposedly on their way to the U.S. currently.

Interesting issue with the backup camera. I haven’t experienced anything like that after 5,000 miles. I’d say something isn’t right if that was a daytime image (which it appears to be)

Yea I noticed it happens after it rains (picture was taken around 6am) and I get close to objects not when they are far away.

I have the same issue, especially when it's raining, as soon as it stops, it clears. But I also have issues seeing in low light, looks like heavy fog.

I thought it was just a feature of an electronic backup camera but if others aren't having these issues maybe I should take it in and have them check it.

I'll be following this thread.

Oh dear. Glad you're getting a loaner, but not so glad that they're already recommending a transmission replacement so early on - especially if they're not ENTIRELY sure that the transmission could be the issue.

That said, it could also fix everything, but who knows. It just sucks that you have to have such a major repair done with a new car. I'm going to keep on noting the behavior with mine as well..

I agree 100%. Hopeful it will fix the issue, not so confident it will. Fingers crossed. Will update everyone as soon as I hear anything.
