I really hope you’re not experiencing the same issue I am, but it sounds pretty similar, unfortunately.OP I've been talking about this with the wife for awhile now and she didn't believe me.
Currently around 1500 miles on a Limited Trim in the Northeast, no mods, I do change drive modes regularly, and experienced a couple bad lurching issues over the past 2-3 weeks. When I park the car it's usually on an incline and I've noticed that if I use certain drive modes OR my custom one (sport steering, power and comfort suspension) it will struggle to find the right gear to go up my driveway.
Resulting in lurches forward like the car doesn't know what to do. There are other moments where I feel like tapping on the throttle hasn't really provided me with the power I was looking for, but I can't tell if that's me being used to a GTI throttle or if there's just an odd transmission play.
That said, I do drive quite a bit of city miles and lots of times they're simple 15-20 minute runs. There's no issues on longer road trips, but the local driving is where this issue really gets to me. Hoping this gets resolved/someone figures it out soon!
The latest update from my advisor at my local dealership, where I dropped my 4Runner on Tuesday, is they contacted an engineer at Toyota and the engineer advised them to reset the transmission so it can begin to learn driving habits all over again. The tech drove my 4Runner today and stated “I’m not convinced this will fix the rough shifting.” He implicated to my advisor the vehicle is still shifting very poorly. They reached back out to Toyota for their next direction but did not receive a response before the end of their work day.
I have a really bad feeling my 4Runner will be with them for weeks, possibly months, until they can figure it out. There goes my trip to Idaho. Really hoping they don’t just swap the entire transmission as I have no idea if parts will even be available.
