You would have to remove all the fluid to check the level. To put it back in you would need a pump. There is no dip stick on their toyota for the transmision fluid.

My guess its a viscosity issue with the fluid.
no you just have to overfill the transmission, get it into temp check mode and drain off excess. No different then previous generations of 4Runners and Tacomas with “sealed” transmissions. You do need a pump though.

I was under the impression you should always let it warm up pre driving and cool down post driving a bit because of the turbo. But I may be mistaken, first turbo.

Hi all. This is the first forum I’ve ever been a part of. I know there’s rules and maybe I’m already breaking some unintentionally. Please forgive me if so.

I picked up my 2025 4Runner TRD Pro in the middle of April in Oregon. Immediately loved it. I think it’s worth mentioning, this is the first 4Runner I’ve owned. I drove it back to Washington state with no issues, just enjoying the drive.

Fast forward to roughly 1,500 miles, I was driving up to a traffic light and my vehicle shifted HARD. To be honest I don’t remember if it was upshifting or downshifting, I just remember it happening two times back to back and saying to my wife “I hope that never happens again”. All seemed to be fine for a couple weeks, although I really only drive it on weekends as I have a work vehicle. Then one day when I was slowing down it downshifted extremely rough from 3rd to 2nd gear. After that it started happening fairly regularly. Every time I would drive it, it would happen at least once. I was parking it backwards in my driveway, which has a slight incline, meaning my front end was pointing downhill. After parking it in a level spot while out running errands, I noticed it shifted just fine on the drive home. I thought maybe that had something to do with it for some reason.

It seemed as though I had ever so slightly figured out a minuscule part of the problem. But then when out on a drive on a windy road, almost every single corner I’d slow down for, it would downshift violently, to the point my tires screeched on the road. It’s almost painful every time it happens, partly due to the fact I just spent $85k on this brand new vehicle, and I know this certainly can’t be good for my transmission.

It’s probably worth mentioning, when shifting from park to first gear, the whole vehicle would lurch forward, or backward, seemingly only when parked on a decline or incline. Not so much when parked level.

I noticed when I put it in sport mode, it ALMOST completely rids the problem, but still doesn’t completely eliminate it. This leads me to believe something is essentially “confused” about what the transmission should be doing at any given point in time.

I’ve taken it to the dealership and they were absolutely zero help and couldn’t even diagnose it. Scheduled an appointment at a different dealership, just praying they’ll actually be able to resolve the issue, although I’m not holding my breath.

All that to say/ask, if anyone else has experienced anything like this, and if so, any ideas or remedies for said problem? Thanks in advance, and sorry for the lengthy post.
You might want to start reviewing the following since it appears you are around 10 days from the 40 day period. I can’t believe Washington state has this long of a period.

I agree with CrispyTaco, I would lemon law that thing and be done with it. As far as the transmission, it is without a doubt the worst driving transmission I've ever had in over 30 years of driving. Driving under 20mph is horrible. Transmission bucks, jerks, slams, and jolts. My RPMs are all over the place when accelerating and even just cruising you can see them jump up and down. I've been at 2 dealers and they were both useless. I just contacted Toyota corporate so we'll see. If nothing comes out of it I will be getting rid of the 4runner.

Just got a call from my advisor at the dealership. He informed me that my transmission supposedly showed up yesterday, even though on 7/3 there still wasn’t even an ETA available. He notified me I won’t be able to receive any updates from the phone app due to the tech disconnecting the battery to replace the transmission in the next few hours.

My theory is, they’re not replacing the transmission, but instead reprogramming and they just received the information they needed from engineers or something. Thoughts?

I think you should ask them, the possibility of a software issue but maybe after the service see if theres any signs of them changing the transmission

if the service ticket says they gave you a new transmission then they gave you a new one. Toyota is not going to write a special software for just one individual vehicle.

I would like to think so. I’ve just had shady and unprofessional experiences with other Toyota dealerships. I think you misunderstood what I meant. I don’t think they wrote something just for my vehicle, but rather they made an update for all other 4Runners currently experiencing the same transmission issues as me.

I don’t much care as long as I receive my vehicle in the near future without the issue that was present when I dropped it off a month ago.

Will let everyone know any updates I receive between now and pick up date.

Ask them to show you the old transmission.

Ask them to show you the old transmission.
That’s a great idea. I’m anticipating “we already got it packaged up to send back to Toyota”. Will definitely let you know though.

Picked up my 4Runner last Wednesday. I’ve only driven it a little over 90 miles, but so far so good!

When I asked to view the old transmission, my advisor said pretty much what I anticipated: “we already shipped it back to Toyota”. He wasn’t able to provide me with what exactly was wrong and didn’t know if Toyota is planning on looking at the transmission once it arrives, or if they’ll just toss it.

Very frustrating experience, but I’m just happy to finally have my 4Runner back. Really hopeful that I don’t get the same issues a couple thousand miles down the road like I did originally.

If anyone else with the same, or similar issues as me is provided with an explanation of what the problem was, please let us know. I’m curious.

Hi all. I thought I'd add my experience to this thread. My 4runner was delivered to me on Wednesday. Yesterday, I was parked on a hill. I then started the truck, put it into Drive, and then put my foot on the gas and the truck rolled backwards. I slammed on the brake, put it in Park, put it back in Drive, it lurched a bit, and it started driving normally. However, soon after, the following warnings came on the dash: Check Engine Light, Drive-Start Control Malfunction, System Malfunction, and Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction.

I went to the dealer today, and they pulled the following codes:

P08BA71; P0741; P07407F; P08BB; P281671; P271371; P2714; P0796; P079571.

Many of these are also referenced in the tacoma TSB (t-sb-0076-24) that guided dealers to replace the transmission.

So....it looks like I'm in for a transmission replacement......GREAT.
