I’ve had my TRD ORP hybrid for about 3 months now, and have started noticing little issues. Very curious if others are having these problems and they are “normal” or specific to my vehicle. Nothing major, but has me questioning what might pop up down the road.

1) The rear spoiler is loose. Like, can move it up and down easily with one finger loose. Noticed it on the first hand wash.
2) Lighting on the steering wheel controls is a fair bit dimmer on the left than the right. Wondering if that’s by design or a problem with the bulb. Pic attached.
3) Songs with bass making a very obvious rattle on the drivers door. Can’t tell if it’s every door, or that’s the only place I hear it while driving around. I’ve seen a few other ppl bring this up, looks like it may be a loose wire behind the door panel.
4) Apple car play randomly making the music quieter with less bass. I have to disconnect and reconnect and it fixes it. Happened 4 times on my 30min commute today. Thinking this is an Apple issue?
5) The shift knob feels very cheap. There’s a lot of play in the button, it creaks when squeezed at all. Just feels lower quality the more I touch it lol.

I know these are all little issues, but it doesn’t quite live up to the “bulletproof” impression I had before owning one myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really liking the truck overall, but I’d be lying if I said these small things don’t have me concerned with long term reliability in more important areas.

Let me know if you guys are having similar issues or have any solutions!!

Random apple car play drops for now reason. I have to go into the menu, select my phone and turn on apple car play again. Very frustrating. Also, I use my phone instead of a key fob. I am noticing that it will give me convenient access however it will not allow me to start the car when I push the button unless the phone is held close to the start button. I have to remove my phone from my pocket and hold it near my dash.

I've noticed that if you use the remote start from the app and get into the truck, for whatever reason carplay doesn't work. you have to go into the settings and connect your phone. Kind of annoying. Other than that I think carplay only disconnected and then reconnected once so far for me

I've had issues with Android Auto connecting as well. Have to shut off then on to connect to auto or go into audio source and select my phone to play Spotify through Bluetooth.

Agree on the shift knob.
Ur spoiler maybe loose, get dealer to check.

I think the spoiler might be designed to have some play. Mine has been like that for 5 months and after many washes and slamming the hatch it’s still the same. The shifter is cheap, but I was also used to the billet aluminum knob I had on my 5th gen. I’m sure there will be aftermarket replacements to swap out. Car play for me has been as consistent as any other car I’ve had with it, lol.

You have to have your phone within range when starting it or your car won't connect to the phone. All you have to do is hold the volume button in for a few seconds and it will restart the info screen and connect the phone, android auto, carplay, etc....

I've had that same issue, if I start the car with my phone, Apple CarPlay won't work unless I cut the car off once I'm inside and then back on. Kind of annoying but Archer's tip will make it slightly less annoying.

I also noticed the rear spoiler being loose. I assume it must be by design to prevent rattle or something because it's excessive. Similar to how the glove compartment door is loose. Not something that really bothers me because I never really touch those things, but still surprised me when I noticed it.

They should've put more effort into the things you do touch often though. The interior door pulls, 4x4 selector knob, and shift knob all feel inexcusably cheap. In fact, I would say the door pulls and selector knob are the cheapest feeling parts of the entire vehicle, and they're the parts you're guaranteed to touch every time you drive it.

My two cents on my 25 TRD ORP...

Cons:
Loose rear spoiler.
Front door panels creak.
Rear window rattle.
Front seats make a popping noise when shifting weight sometimes.
Jittery ride quality on roads with small bumps/cracks.
Intermittent seat memory issues.
Odd ergonomic placement of cupholders.
Tight egress/ingress rear seats.
Less rear legroom than prev gen (IMO).
Feels less durable/tough than prev gen (my wife has a 23 4runner).
Poor MPG for 4 cyl. (15 mpg mostly city).
Kick sensor for rear hatch doesn't work consistently.
Overpriced.

Pros:
Styling (Subjective).
Smooth acceleration.
Decent power for 4 cyl.
Seat comfort.
Cameras/infotainment (premium model).
Strong AC.
Good ventilated front seats (premium model).

This has happened to me in my previous cars (RAV4 hybrid and Lexus NX250) I think it is a Toyota issue, or both Toyota and Apple when connecting wirelessly. I used to connect the phone at all times. Now the USB-C conector is located on the side of the center display, so I don’t do it that often. Perhaps we need to wait for a software update.

Interesting... My TH has not given me any of these issues in the 3 months of ownership, with exception of the CarPlay connection which only happems when the phone is a low battery levels. COuld be a phone software battery power conservation thing. Will keep thes in consideration in the months to come.

2 questions I have.

1. Are you not aware that the first year of every new vehicle model in history has had issues?

2. What did your dealer say when you took it in?

Yes, I’m aware the first years of a redesign come with their fair share of growing pains. I think keeping a list of common issues and potential fixes would be a lot of value to new and potential new owners. No one wants to be disappointed after a >$50k purchase.

Haven’t been to a dealership in my city yet (3600 miles, bought out of state) but I plan to bring these up at my 5k service and will report back.
