Guys. I continue to be puzzled. Do not get me wrong, I love my SR5….but when I fill up the dash shows 305 miles to empty. Is this a tank size issue or a bad reading somewhere?
My pilot V6 used to get about 420 miles to empty when the tank was full.

Am i missing anything? Forgive me if this has been answered before.

thx

Toyota reduced the tank size from the previous gen, it was 23g, because of the efficient new engine.

19 g gas tank with average mpg of 20-23 should get about 380+ miles. I wonder if the indicator have some "reserve" once you run it down to 0. Maybe 2g in reserve.

I've been tracking this issue on my hybrid 4Runner, and the data I've collected indicates that my 19 gallon fuel tank consistently has ~3 gallons of gas left in it when the gauge is reading empty, so I suspect it's a sensor issue that can hopefully be calibrated. The readings are off by the same amount every time, so I'm going to ask Toyota service to look into it next time I take it in...

That sounds about right based on my 5th gen results. For it, the Idiot light comes on at 20 miles left with 3.5g left.

if 0 miles was actually 0 people would run out of gas and probably sue Toyota 😂

My 5th Gen (2017) was much closer to empty when the gauge said so. My fill ups on the 5th Gen when the gauge showed 10-20 miles left, were typically less than a gallon remaining. I'd much rather have that and trust the accuracy of the gauge, than have Toyota hedge for me.

And just remember the estimated miles on tank will be calculated on your last real time MPG. So if you were driving in a situation where you were getting poor MPG, the computer will estimate based on that number. It’s why people get different estimates on fill up.

Good point. I will fill up and reset everything and see what I get but i have a feeling that the numbers will not change.

mpg to empty is based on your previous mileage per tank. so if constantly do in town driving, your avg per tank will be less, if you do more highway miles your avg will be higher

its been liked that for toyota's since at least the 2010's

its why i use the fuel gauge to determine refill and hand calc the mpg per tank every time to get an accurate mpg

edit: also the fuel gauge is lopsided on reading the tank level. the top half of the gauge needle moves slower than the bottom half of the tank.

Yes it is estimated on your past driving, not sure if it is your last tank or your average fuel mileage, I would assume it is your fuel mileage average

To be fair I have been using it mainly for city driving. So far I have about 18.5 mpg average so that will skew the results for sure.
