Right after I installed the factory roof rack cross bars, we started noticing a lot of wind noise starting about 40mph and increasing in volume the faster we went. It's so loud and freeway speeds that I'm seriously considering removing the cross bars until we need them.

Maybe "wind noise" is too strong a term but with all windows up, and with music off, AC fan on minimum, nobody else in the vehicle, I hear something like a light blowing air noise from the back cabin. Too hard to pinpoint where, other than to say it's behind the driver position; it's kind of a broad noise.

Is this maybe coming through the speakers, as some form of noise cancelling?
Sometimes my top rack will make noise when the wind is just right.

I’ve thought this as well.

It’s funny man. I thought of this post today when I was out running errands. It’s a little warmer today in NY so I had the vented seats on, as soon as I turned it off, while in motion mind you, that wind noise dissipated substantially. lol I was going to comment on this thread again tonight.
My 1997 4Runner never had ventilated seats so I can just turn it off and I would never know the difference on my new car I get in May.

Unfortunately, it's not the vented seats. At least on the Pro, it's coming from the outside. I'm sure there will be a fix eventually!

I noticed the roof rack has open holes to mount the cross bars. I wonder if they would whistle as certain speed? I think I will get some plastic push fit plugs for them just in case.

Hi - do you have the cross bars installed on the roof rack? I "removed" mine and the the wind noise went away. I kept thinking I had a window cracked open..

I removed the cross bars and wonderd the same thing.. but its so much quiteter with them removed, the little holes (indentations) don't seem to make a difference

No such noises from my ORP other than mistaking the ventilated seats for an open window.

Depending on the type of wind noise coming from the cross bars, you might be able to mitigate it by wrapping a bungee cord around each bar. It's a common solution to fix whistling, but it's not clear that is the same issue being described here. Anyway, it might be worth a shot? Here's an example from another forum:

Good to know on the bungee cords. I opted to not get the cross bars for now.
