I've got the TRD Off-Road Premium, and there's a blank insert just beneath the main headlight assembly. It's physically separate from the headlight (you can wiggle it independently) and it seems like it's just a plastic insert/placeholder for some other feature or option that's not installed.

Does anyone know anything about it? How is it attached to the headlight and/or body panel? What's directly behind it?

If anyone has opened things up and happens to have photos, I'd love to get a better look at it.

I'm thinking about a mod that would fit in this space, but I need more deets first...

I'm not sure it actually has any purpose. To me it looks like a stylistic choice carried over from 3rd gen and eventually 4th gen Taco, where it serves no real functional purpose. On both Tacomas it is just a removable plastic trim piece, aftermarket sells color replacements:

Since 24 Taco and 25 4R appear to have at least physical headlight cross-compatibility, the piece probably just adapts the same headlight housing to 2 different front ends, on the cheap.

Here's what I'm thinking about... I'm planning to mount two Wicked Warnings LIN-6 LED Strobe Lights in these locations. I tinted the lights so it will be really low key and hardly noticeable (except when they're on!)

Shouldn't be too difficult and the fit is just about perfect. I'll need to mount the fixture to the plastic insert — either by screwing/bolting onto it, and/or getting creative with some epoxy. Then I just need to find a wiring path back to my SwitchPro panel.
