Here's a picture of the cargo area at night with the optional D-Pillar lights. You can see how they provide a much wider beam spread, and illuminate from a higher vantage point, so they make a big difference. I'd estimate the bulbs are about 3 times as bright as the basic cargo area lights.

The tailgate lights that came installed in my 4Runner don't help with lighting at all. I'm thinking of adding these panel lights to my car.

For those of us that didn't get these with the car, any idea how difficult is it to install after delivery has been taken? I'd guess the harness is there, just a panel that gets removed, light plugged in and snapped in place.

or would it be better to wait for the aftermarket scene to catch up?

Installation took me 15 minutes max. And if I knew what I was doing, I probably could have had it done in 5. Harness is already there. Hardest part was just being comfortable with pulling the old panel out.

someone posted pictures and you are correct you remove the dpillar there is a harness you plug in and snap in from what I recall. Price online was $230 I want to say... I'm considering it as well

Cool, thanks for the info. I did find another writeup where they had removal/installation walkthru.

How do you like the new lights vs old? When I first saw them I thought it was kinda gimmicky, but after seeing IRL posts they look nice. Clear, bright, putting the light in the cargo area and not your face.

I'm thinking about purchasing this and doing it myself. I saw that one of the first steps is disconnecting the battery. After everything was installed, did you have any issues with any memory settings or re-login again?

To be honest... since it was just a quick snap together connection I didn't disconnect the battery.

Yeah when I went to test drive I asked why there were two light options. The lights on the hatch - $200 option I believe - is vastly inferior to this option. But it sets you back $589. I believe this is a port installed option if you don't already have your vehicle.

Anyone know how to get those lights to switch off when rear hatch is open other than waiting the 20 minutes?
