you can remote start via the fob, but dont be surprised at the limited range. and the button sequence is picky on timing on hitting the buttons.

i mean i have tried to remote start via the fob from the garage and the vehicle was 10 feet on the other side of the door and it still didnt start.

and 1 last thing, remote start via the fob still follows only 2 remote starts and locks out until you unlock and relock the vehicle and limits to 10 mins per remote start.

really going to miss my 25min timer on my 2014 4R remote start (3rd party)
I am not an expert in different package and trim level but i can start my trd sport with my phone from anywhere and I am not paying any subscription. By the way I am Canadian.

3yrs is free (canuck version), afterwards you have to pay a sub to continue remote start via the app

pulled this from the .ca website

Ya, I don't believe that. I think the dealer either is confused or doesn't know exactly. The FOB and remote start have nothing to do with the internet.
The dealer is correct. You need a subscription. The key fob interacts with the computer in the vehicle, and if the vehicle detects the subscription is expired, the car doesn't unlock with the toyota mobile app or remote start with the Fob. It's stupid. When mine expires, I'm going to get an aftermarket Compustar remote start system to work with the killswitch I have that was dealer installed. I don't need the app really.

Well that's stupid and maybe a Canada thing in regards to the key FOB. The remote start wth FOB hasn't been a problem with any Tacos, Tundras or Sequoias here in the states. Dunno...

In Canada you can’t remote start your car from the FOB without a subscription. that’s what the dealer told me? I haven’t got my 4Runner yet so I’m going with what I was told? USA might have different options for all of you, also here if I want the roll down windows from the FOB the dealer does it totally for free.
The dealer may not know how to do it. Mine told me the FOB doesn't have the feature to start it and I had to use the app. I already knew how to do it with the key fob before asking, just asked to hear the response.

remote start via the fob is press lock, lock, and hold 3rd lock until the parking lights flash then release the lock button.

its like .5 sec per press on 1 and 2, if too fast or too slow it wont register the sequence to remote start.

Not starting with the key FOB without a subscription is dumb considering "FOB" stands for Free On Board.

This video seems to add some more information. Indicates remote start with FOB will work for 10 years after first use. But does require you to have accepted the connected services data connect.

Unbelivable eh? They don't make it simple, and they are trying to literally monetize everything now.

Not following this thought - I'm not paying anything for that 10 year connected service thing - just giving Toyota ability to have my data (which is a form of payment). I'm not sure if its something that only comes with premium trim but since you have ORP too, you also are not paying for this particular subscription. (I turned down anything that will require a paid subscription). Now, when my 10 years are up .... I guess I might have a decision to make if they want a subscription fee.

Yea I don't really even use the app myself. I've used the remote start a handful of times to turn the AC on during the hot weather before heading out, and to see if the service guys are done with my car (by judging if windows and doors are closed and locked lol). I don't even use the built in NAV in the multimedia screen. Rediculous how its a paid product, where every other GPS nav is free with the vehicle.. such a money grab. I use CarPlay anyhow. The app is not only the place where your data is being siphoned. It also gets sold and used on the vehicle sale. You agree to all these terms and conditions (even with a cash buy) for Toyota to collect your info with no easy way to opt out. Unfortunate the way the world is now.
