I'm going to make a roadside emergency tool kit for my 4Runner instead of lugging the entire toolbox with me.

I'd like to hear any suggestions as to what tools/sizes are a must have for carrying in the 4Runner.

Thanks and my apologies if this has been posted elsewhere on the site.

What type of repairs are you comfortable making on the side of the road/trail, and are you planning to take the 4Runner off road?

I carry a short piece of 2x8" to use as a base for the jack, something to loosen lug nuts over-tightened by tire shops, and a Leatherman tool. I just added a 10mm wrench and I've used it exactly once.

1. also a portable air compressor that runs off rechargeable battery pack
2. torque wrench (if you have to swap out a tire, this will really help since the lug nug torque spec is only like 131 nm)
3. led rechargeable headlamp that you can strap to your head
4. portable waterproof mat, if you have to crawl under the vehicle in the rain, you will save your clothes from the road dirt/grim (i would suggest the tyvek suit over this)
5. tyvek suits if you dont want to get your clothes dirty, a 1 pack of them is like $20
6. penetrating lube (for those frozen lug nuts)
7. air impact wrench in conjunction with 1 (use this to break lug nuts only, do not use to tighten lug nuts)
8. buy a good air gauge and not a cheap $20-$30 one
9. forgot to add, if you get any electric tools, get brushless

these are only suggestions, as this can get spendy real quick

i cheated once and bought a torque wrench from HD and took it back after my trip since i never needed it

this is the portable air compressor i use, i can attach 2 x 4 amp chargeable batteries to the backside

I'm going to add to my list the 10mm wrench and upgrade from a 2x4 to the 2x8 for jack assistance. The wood is a total lifesaver for off road tire changes.

Thanks for the response.

Thank you very much for the response.

I'm definitely getting an air compressor - currently have a bicycle pump which works but is quite the workout.

Also, the mat or Tyvek suit is a great suggestion.

Thid is what I currently got on my Tacoma & 4Runner for daily commute.

I know it's expensive but the Toyota Emergency Roadside Assistance Kit PT420-00130 - has a couple of useful bits like the jumper cables, gloves, rain poncho & pocket multi tool.
Couple of pairs of latex gloves.
Pack of zip ties & Hi-viz vest
A tire plug kit & a battery powered tire inflator go hand and hand.

I recently got a battery powered Impact driver to change tires but that's only for road trip purposes.

Changing a tire or plugging a hole is about as much as I would do on the side of the road.

P.S. the tyvec suit and 2x8 piece of wood are awesome ideas.
