Crossbar wind noise?

Hi All! I'll be taking delivery of an TRD Pro in a few weeks. It has some accessories that I didn't originally want, specifically the $420 Crossbars.

Will the Crossbars create noticeable wind noise at highway speed?

You got a good deal! I didn’t want them either, they were 550.00 added on.. I too mine off. They are wrapped ready to re-sell to someone that needs them. PIA to get them off a little - you need the plastic pry tool and Allen wrench that came with the vehicle. I’m glad I took mine off. At 54MPH and higher I kept thinking there was window open in the back. Good luck!

most come installed so I couldn't tell you if its quieter without them but even with no music on its hardly loud inside. I wouldn't worry about it.

I am wondering if the little wind noise I hear is from those bars on mine, and others have mentioned it. I plan to try taking them off to see; I will try to remember to give feedback where when I finally do. That said, the noise is not terrible at all, just perceptable--which is why I have not gotten to the job yet. Like others have said, it sounds like a window is open slightly.

I did want them, but do not need them at this time. I have a Thule storage box I may use up there at some point.

I agree I only notice it with a strong cross wind. I added the cross bar 2 weeks into ownership. It had a lot of wind noise with a bike rack on the crossbars, I took off the bike rack after a couple days.

I definitely had wind noise coming from my OEM cross bars at highway speeds. I took mine off after ~900 miles and the vehicle became much quieter. I then changed the tires from the stock Michelins (ORP Premium Hybrid) to Nitto Terra Grappler G3 tires (33”) and it became even quieter. I don’t expect the 4Runner to be near-silent like a Lexus sedan, but I believe I still have noise coming from the A-pillars at highway speeds.

Extra thoughts (not related to noise): Overall, I’m very happy with my 6th Gen, along with my post-purchase upgrades and other personalizations. My biggest functional changes have been the Westcott lift (2.5” front, 0.75” rear) and the larger Nitto tires wrapped on TRD Pro rims. These two changes alone made the vehicle drive better (and I think the appearance is transformed, too). I haven’t done any significant off-roading (yet), but expect it will be up to anything I’m interested in doing as a hiker and mountain biker…

Can you get the oem crossbars off if you don’t have the Allen wrench that came with it? I don’t think I got that at least I don’t know that I have seen it anywhere.

I believe it is in the glove box with the trailer hitch bolt.

I only hear mine with the moonroof open. Even just cracked open I can hear the whistle.
