All,

I have been reading that some people recommend changing the oil before the first 5K miles. Actually I've read some suggesting between 500 miles to 1k miles.

Is this true, or is this overly cautious and waiting until 5K should be ok?

I already scheduled my first appointment to change at around 1.7K buth thought worth asking here to get your thoughts.

Thank you.

My opinion: turbo engines: first oil change 1k miles, then every 3k miles/6mos which ever comes first will be my interval. Might be able to squeeze it to 3.5k intervals, but I'd definitely do it more often than the 5k interval for 5th gen.

Some great info on the value of changing early. This is one of the guys who knows his stuff on oil. Certainly worth a watch:

I'll be changing mine at 500 miles for sure.

Take this with a grain of salt as I do my own oil changes but not really a mechanically savvy car guy...

I did my oil change at 2k miles because I was told it was important to get the metal particulates out of the engine from the manufacturing process. I did watch the oil fairly closely and I didn't really see any metal flakes or anything of the sort in the oil as it was draining.

FWIW, the Toyota manual doesn't recommend a pre 5k oil change. With a turbo engine, I would 100% change it every 5k miles and no more, but in my opinion, you're probably fine with just sticking to 5k

usually most do it at

1k,
5k/6m
then every 5k/6m after that as a minimum

ADM from CCN recommends every 5k/6m as a minimum regardless of forced or NA

the hard core will do it every 3k

I did my first one @ 1900 miles for peace of mind. Currently at 6000 miles and planning to do another one soon. From here on out, I’ll do 5k.

My 5th gen didn’t have a break-in oil change, and I did 7500 mile intervals (Mobil 1) for 234,000 miles without a single issue.

I always thought that you’re supposed to change the oil every six months or 5000 miles whichever comes first. A Toyota guy at the service department said that I should change my oil at least every six months even if I drive it only 1 mile.

I was going to do mine at 1,000 but got delayed and had it done at 1,400. Will continue to change the oil every 5,000. It doesn't cost that much, paid $90 at the Toyota dealer, and gives me piece of mind.

the whole 5k/6m deal is to ensure whichever you hit first you do it at.

just be pragmatic about it. if you are using syn oil and you have only like 1200 miles on the oil, it really doesnt make much sense to replace the oil at 6 months.

its mostly to do with say after 6 months you only put say 3000-4000 miles on the oil then it needs to be changed or you hit 5k miles on the oil in 4 months.

oils now a days dont have the issues like the in 80/90's especially synthetics.

i ususally go 5k miles on my syn oil in the tundra since we can barely get 5000-8000 miles in a year.

our 2023 tundra we have had since 22-feb-2023 and as of today we only have 14,222 miles on it in 2 yrs 3 months.

but thats my call, your threshold may be different

I changed my oil after 500mi. I've been a Subaru (STI) guy since they came out...turbo's put an additional strain on the powertrain. I changed my oil every 3K miles after the initial 500mi on those cars as well to ensure metal shaving were removed from the oil. I understand that the STI was a different sort of beast, but turbo's are turbo's. I would not recommend following the oil interval as suggested by Toyota...oil/filters are cheap...engines...not so much. As an FYI...although I did not send my oil out for sampling, it appeared clear and absent of debris with the naked eye. Better safe than sorry.

Changed mine at 2,000. Im going to change every 5,000 thereafter . Don’t follow the advised 10,000 mile interval.!

Just did mine today @2500, will do it again at 6k then 10k then every 5k. I will say it was pretty dirty for only 2500 miles. Also 8 bolts to take off 2 plastic worthless skids, I'll be upgrading to the same skid I put on my '25 Tacoma!

$90 bucks for a 6 qt oil change?? Wow that's pricey I did it myself for less than half that and it took 25 minutes with Mobil 1 and OEM filter.
