I like the look of the fixed running boards but don't use them and they kind of get in the way of getting in and out of the 4runner. I think they're mounted to the body and not the frame, so I don't know how much protection they'd provide. What do you think...keep them or remove them?

Don't use. Get in the way. You answered your own question. Remove!

If there are any shorter females in your life, they might disagree with removal of the step. My wife is 5' tall and would struggle without it.
As far as the OEM step providing some protection, probably not much. TFL took their new ORP off road near Moab and damaged one of the steps within a day or two after they bought it. You can find the video on their You Tube channel.

Keep. We had running boards on our 3rd Gen and we miss them on our 5th gen (which we bought used). Will definitely get running boards when we get our 6th gen.

(Not steps. And not articulated.)

Good question. I have them on my 25 ORP with the tire upgrade package and love them. Solid and practical. Nice tiny drip holes too! They are a must have for my height challenged wife and my 89 year old father. I'm 6'3" and I use them to get in. Without the tire upgrade, I don't think I'd need them myself.

Ok I decided to take them off. It’s just six 12mm bolts per running board. Seems easy enough to reinstall if I change my mind.

I think it looks better with them on but it’s a lot easier to get in and out without them (weird). Maybe I’ll get some low profile rock sliders.

My Sport Premium came with the Predator Drop Steps and I actually prefer the fixed running boards. I live in SoCal too, any chance you’d want to swap?

Got a 8 year old so the last few months he was able to get in and out without it but I figured i'll get either a running board or rock sliders for easier accessibility. Short people problems. Another benefit is protect against sedan/coupe non tall car accidental door dings.

The CBI I have my eye on is just darn expensive + $300 shipping! So i settle with a generic EBAY running board that another thread on here mention works.

I can confirm it works! I received it and installed in on 6th gen TRD SPORT. The bolts on the frames are reusable. Uses 12mm sockets for the running board and under carriage bolts.

This is what I purchased. Land Cruiser running boards. Like the other person mention. Go US reseller/shipper in case there's problems. Mine came well packaged in a single box with foam on both ends. Ordered July 1st. Received today on the 5th. It's factions the cost and huge savings in the pocket for now. I might in the distant future get higher quality when there's more options.

The steel brackets fits exactly. No extra adjustments. No extra drilling. It's ABS top over aluminum frame with bottom exposed. I do not have idea how OEM running boards look.

So, the 2024/2025 Land Cruiser body is exactly the same as 2025 4Runner.

Are the running boards like the 5th Gen,?unless you are really short you will hit your head trying to get in the car.

Thank you for the comparison pictures! Looks good both ways for sure. I’m leaning to keeping mine on more for rock and dirt protection as I am 2km a day on backroads. I have no use for them to get in or out and agree that without them getting in would be easier.
