or just buy a tablet for your passenger and be done with it :)

personally i wouldnt use the center dash screen to watch a movie, even parked. and on top of that, if you are not moving, the master shut off will cut power to the vehicle after roughly 20 mins of activity.

and the tablet on trips is better than just for movies. the spouse use's it for email, games, movies, and chat.

lot more versatile than just watching movies.

Following. I'd like to find a way to have CalTopo running on that big ass screen. (They said they have no plans to support CarPlay directly)

This adapter has Android built in, so you can download any Android app without restrictions. It will load the main interface first, By default, it will automatically connect to your iPhone and project it to the screen. I disabled the automatic connection to carplay, but I still like to search for my favorite music on YouTube sometimes.
* When carplay is automatically connected through this adapter, it loads quickly, but it can't play YouTube. You have to exit carplay and turn on the phone's hotspot mode as an Internet uplink, so that you can watch YouTube on the main interface of the adapter.
* If I want to switch from youtube to carplay, it's easy. I just go back to the home screen and click on the carplay icon. The adapter will try to connect to the iPhone and show it on the screen. If I want to switch from carplay back to YouTube, I have to connect to my phone's hotspot in the settings before I can watch YouTube. It's a bit cumbersome, and there may be some functions I haven't learned yet. Overall, I am satisfied with this product.

This looks great but as an IT professional, I am leary about 3rd party devices that can link into your devices. Are you saying you were able to skirt around that and just use Android apps? That would be fantastic if so.

I don't understand what you mean that skirt around . Can you describe it in more detail? You can use the cell phone hotspot function as an internet uplink, so that this adapter can access the internet. Because the adapter is built-in Android, you can use Android apps such as Google map, YouTube, TikTok, etc. They will be displayed on the screen. But I find it troublesome to enter the address through the touch screen. Usually when I need to find a GPS route, I usually enter the address in my phone and display it on the car screen through CarPlay.

I am a professional IT engineer also. In my 25 years of experience in business engineering and personal information, I think we are too sensitive about the security of personal information. I even saw a pet clinic with only three phones. The IT guy actually set up VLAN on the switch to isolate the voice service. I really don't know what his original intention was. I think it was just to lock in users and make them pay.

I'm a bit off topic,lol

Not being sensitive, just vigilant. Wondering if there is a third party UI that asks for your creds prior to running CarPlay/Android Store.

I did not encounter such queries when running CarPlay/Android Store.
Lol,about that link,If they can catch more serial killers , I will trust them more. By the way, this product is made in China. If you think your personal information is at risk, you need to get more usage reports or test reports to judge for yourself.
