I started the discussion about number of bars so decided to show that 8 is, in fact, achievable. See photo below. We know the battery charges when brakes are applied and from the gas engine through some magic algorithm (e.g., when there are only 3 bars, the engine will much more rarely turn off completely, but with 5 bars the engine shuts down (zero RPS on tach) much more frequently when cruising even very slightly downhill). And I've now found another mechanism that will charge the battery quickly: engine braking. I took an off road excursion this past weekend and on the way to the the trails in George Washington National Forest I crossed over the Shenandoah parkway. The way down is long and steep and switchbacked so I put it in standard mode and used the engine to slow things down - mostly 3rd gear and a bit of 2nd and 4rh. and I watched the battery climb until it was all the way up to 8 bars! It went down quickly when I got to the trail and climbed the rocky trail in 4Lo. (even locked the diff and used crawl mode along with MTS under car view to avoid rocks poking through the plastic skid plate:>) So much fun. But the main point for this thread: 8 Bars!

New TRD ORP Hybrid owner here, just hit 150mi so still breaking in slowly but have noticed most of our trips around town are between 19 and 23 depending on how much accelerating I do. I’m curious how it will be once I get a chance to work in more highway too.

Also was intrigued by everyone’s opinion on gas octane, I plan on using premium because of this in my manual:
2025 Toyota 4runner Hybrid Real World MPG (iForce Max) - post your model, specs, general driving conditions, results: IMG_0493

Although it’s built for 87, since they tested it at 91 that’s what I will also do. I also don’t drive a ton, if I did my wallet would steer me otherwise.

Regardless of my mpg, I’m loving every single mile in this thing!

Just note that 91 RON (an octane measurement used in Europe and other places) is essentially equivalent to 87 octane (an average of RON and motor octane number) in the US. Confusing. I'm not sure what octane the 4runner MPG and other numbers are based on since I never saw anything from Toyota clearly defining it.

3rd fillup dash 23.2 but calculated 24.3 so maybe Eco mode is better. Same driving mix/destinations. Going to do another tank in Eco then back to normal or maybe try sport. So far very happy. Power and mpg compared to my 21

After owning a Wrangler 4xe and Tesla model 3, I just picked up my new Off-Road Premium Hybrid in Baltimore and drove it back to Virginia during rush hour. I also missed an exit and ended up driving through D.C., which I figured it would be a good test to see what the trip computer would calculate and how the hybrid system would perform in real world traffic.

I drove in eco the entire time and I generally stayed 5-10 mph over the limit with a top speed of 65 mph. The route was probably 30% highway and 70% stop and go. I'm very impressed with how the hybrid system handled the stop and go traffic, and the driving was immensely better than the Wrangler.

WOW that's impressive!
The best I've seen on a drive is 26.7. On a Tank ( i only reset after fill ups) = 23.4
Currently on Fuelly I'm @ 20.5 since I've been tracking. AC on since day 1 ..... I'm so ready for Fall/ Winter.
TH @ 8330 milels

I’m based out of Canada, is it really worth the ownerships costs for owing a TRD off road premium when I do 3500km a month and with todays fuel costs it’s going to cost my $685 CAD for fuel costs - since driving in stop and go traffic highway

It is VERY impressive if the 29.9 MPGs is across the entire trip (73.7 miles-2.53 hrs). But accidentally resetting the total avg mpgs is something I've done several times and I wonder if newguy did that so the mpgs not really representative of the entire trip. (not distrusting newguy - just offering a possibility). For example, here is a short - almost all downhill trip result (this is the same trip where my battery went up to 8 bars - engine braking via standard mode on switchbacks):

Best tank yet: 23.5 MPGs
75% highway, premium gas, normal mode, air dam on (replaced after off-roading excursion).
Because of the instant feedback on current MPGs - and hybrid battery use - that the dash provides, I've become sensitive to trying to keep the instantaneous milage higher than the current average - not quite a hyper-miler but paying attention. But when I need to stomp on the gas to pull into fast traffic or avoid a collision, I do not hesitate - and the turbos and battery together are hella responsive.
Steady increase in tank MPG over time - except for my last tank that included 30 miles in 4LO and forgetting to take it out of 4HI for a week (150 or so miles out of the 312 for that tank).
Lastly, I am now almost always on the path to 400+ miles/tank. Projected at 446 on most recent tank (I subtract the fill amount from 19 and multiple by tank MPGs and add result to actual miles traveled to get "Range Est.)

TL/DR: Best tank yet: 23.5 MPG!

Nice Update!
The response and predictability of the throttle is amazing on these rigs! So glad I went Hybrid.

Sitting around 20.5 overall. TH. Almost 9K miles.
Lately the city hustle in the inferno heat is taking a toll on mpg. Highway short trips are still good : 22-24.

How's everyone's hybrid MPG stats looking lately?
2 months and 1500 miles in im at 20 mpg. mostly city driving to and from work where i get a lot less which is mostly because idle time and cooling the truck off. if i do highway i get between the 22-24 on the trip. stock right now, have westcott lift and rims/tires incoming so see how bad it takes a hit

Hey all! Wanted to give an update after driving the car for a bit more and being able to take it on a road trip to offroad at Assateague Island. No mods have been done to the car, and I have been driving it in eco mode.

From what I've seen, driving around ~10-20 mins around town to do simple errands do yield less MPGs. I've seen it range from anywhere from 18-25 MPG and is definitely lower when there are more hills/inclines.

Errand run on the higher side of MPG

Coming from the 4xe Wrangler, I know the PHEV setup works differently from the i-Force Max system in the 4runner, but I've been surprised at how often the engine shuts off and can cruise on the electric system. One thing I have noticed is that if I am able to keep the electric boost meter under half, the engine will not turn on and will continue to use the electric motor (so as long as the battery indicator is around half or more).

Highway driving definitely has more consistent and higher MPGs recorded by the car. The speed limit around here is generally 55-65 MPH, and I usually sit about 5 over the posted limit where I see anywhere from 22-29 MPGs.

Driving into DC with traffic on a weekday

On our Assateague trip, we stopped for the dogs and to pick up some supplies for the OSV zone and saw 27.6 MPG over the course of ~2 hours. I forgot to take a picture for the 2nd leg since we were excited for the beach and wild horses, but I did capture the return trip. Return home was non-stop with little to no traffic and we got 28.7 MPG over ~3 hours.

I've set the car to show the trip average rather than total average, so the information resets each time the car starts. I figure that every time I start the car, I start to drive almost immediately so it's a good gauge for errands, road trips, or commutes. Appreciate you sharing your tracked MPGs though, the numbers are cool to see! I didn't decide to do something similar since I leave the car idle for long periods of times for our dogs, and feel like that would throw off from the driving data I care about.

Overall, I'm really impressed by the hybrid system. I did drive both the regular and hybrid ORP, and I felt the hybrid was more smooth and similar to what I've driven in recent time. Definitely agree with everyone on how punchy the car feels when you want or need it to be!

Awesome update. You may have convinced me to set one of my screens like yours (need to see if I can have one screen show average and one show trip... I think so...?)
From your examples I can say that you are doing better than me - and I think better than most - on your MPGs. I've got a couple examples of high 20s on longish trip (29.9 on a 21 mile leg last week), but mostly much lower - as shown by my averages. (Not bad - just not as good:>) I'm tempted to compare a drive into DC with yours but .... even though I work there, I don't ever drive there - parking is just too much of a headache. Metro is my friend:>)
Good stuff. Thanks for posting (and replying)
