I know this is a somewhat unusual request, but I need to be sure that I can park a 4Runner in my driveway in a very strict HOA (all four tires must be on the driveway). To do this, I need to calculate the dimensions of the 4Runner, specifically the distance from the front bumper to the center of the front tire, as well as the distance from the center of the rear tire to the back bumper. Since I already have the wheelbase and the total length of the vehicle, I can easily find out whether it will fit in my driveway.

For illustration purposes, I need the dimension in red :) I couldn't find any information on the net.

Thanks!

Isnt the bottom number on your picture the overall length?

I have both the overall length and the wheelbase measurements. However, I can only assume that the front and rear overhangs (the "lip" lengths) are equal and split the difference after subtracting the wheelbase. But this doesn’t appear to be the case based on the picture. It can get quite tight when parking two cars in the driveway, so I would like to know if I can park either nose-in or backed-in while keeping all the tires on the driveway. The HOA hasn’t mentioned anything about the overhang length.

It's not a particularly easy thing to measure super accurately but I get 37" for the front and 46" for the back, on my ORP.

What matters is what your CC&Rs say in writing, not what opinion someone offers that is on the board or management company or a neighbor. It's probably, intentionally, super-vague in the CC&R, to give the lawyers maximum flexibility to screw with you.

Thanks a ton! This is exactly what I needed. You were pretty spot on; with your measures, the total length is 195.2 inches, and the official total length is 194.9 inches - just 0.3" off! You're a star!

Here are the measures I needed for anyone else who might run into a similar challenge:
  • Total measure from front of vehicle to center of rear wheel: This is the Front Overhang plus the Wheelbase: 37 inches (front overhang)+112.2 inches (wheelbase)=149.2 inches So, the total measure from the front bumper to the center of the rear wheel is 149.2 inches.
  • Total measure from rear bumper to center of front wheel: This is the Rear Overhang plus the Wheelbase: 46 inches (rear overhang)+112.2 inches (wheelbase)=158.2 inches So, the total measure from the rear bumper to the center of the front wheel is 158.2 inches.
I have 155 inches to park, which means I'll have to park nose-in. That's the preferred option anyway, so I can open the trunk easily!

Cant imagine living in a place where I need to measure my own vehicle to see if I am allowed to purchase it. Do they get to approve the color?

Hmmm. 155 inches to park a 194" vehicle. Depending on who owns the sidewalks and streets in your neighborhood, if it's the local municipality, they may have ordinances against blocking the sidewalk. You might want to check into that too, not just the HOA rules. Does your whole neighborhood have driveways that are this ridiculously short? I'd bet 95%+ of cars are longer than 155" overall length.

Late edit: Apparently there are even state laws about a vehicle in a driveway blocking sidewalks. See for example the following from Arizona law: https://www.azleg.gov/ars/28/00873.htm#:~:text=2.,loading or unloading the vehicle.

Edit to add, on this list of the 20 shortest cars, only 3 are under 155" and the 3rd one is just barely.

My HOA states driveway parking is temporary only, but does not state what the definition of temporary, I have never parked my 4Runner in the garage, or my other vehicle I traded in, So far no complaints, I hope. Because use it everyday and not a parked extra vehicle collecting dust

Sorry for the confusion! I’m parking two cars one behind the other to make sure they fit. I can’t change the length of the two existing cars, but I have to be careful with the new one :)

I think this one would be on the driveway and mostly used.

Everyone’s aware of the glitch in our HOA. But there is another one, for instance, if my back overhang is 5 feet, and my rear wheel is in the driveway -> I’m good to go, even if half of my car is blocking the street, I’m still allowed to park.
