I looked at where to install this for a long time. I arrived at the conclusion that this was the best location for my use...

Did anyone else add a GMRS radio yet? Where did you mount it?

Similar to where I installed a CB in my 3rd gen back in the day.
I'm thinking of using a hand-held unit in the future.

I keep some handhelds on me, but use vehicle mounted radios mostly. They work a little better and you don't have to worry about batteries, but the handhelds are great when you need to wander away from the vehicle. The handhelds seem to work OK for small groups that stick close together.

The other thing you have to decide is whether to wire things up directly to the battery or on a circuit that's only live with the vehicle on. I always wire directly up to the battery, but then you have to remember to turn the radio off.

I used to use CBs too - with long ridiculous whip antennas. The GMRS seems to work better and the antennas are smaller. I even went to the trouble to get the GMRS FCC license, but I'm guessing most people don't bother.

I take it that under one of the front seats didn't work?

I thought about it, but this just seemed to be in a better position IMO. I'd need to make sure the power seats don't interfere and I could route the mic somewhere convenient (might need an extension and to be mindful of the wire when moving the seat). It should be easy to move if I decide to try something else, but this seems to work fine for now. I'll know how much I like it after a few trips.

For now, this is how I have it mounted...

This location has been fine in the past on other vehicles for my use (communicating with other radios relatively close by). I'll move it to a better location and/or get a higher gain antenna if I think I need it. Time will tell. I also keep handheld radios in the vehicle with me as a backup or for when I'm out of the vehicle.

Can you like to the mount for your antenna there? I think that is exactly what I'm gonna do too

Ooo... I like that location. Where did you run the power wiring?

I figure this would be a good solution to route the antenna wire to the roof rack. https://www.4runner6g.com/forum/thr...capitol-rack-diy-install-how-to-writeup.4085/
I just used the firewall pass-through on the passenger side for mine. I didn't have an auxiliary switch option, but I imagine that's more convenient.
