Semi-new to the community. Been watching from afar and have some experience off-roading with my brother, but I've never built my own rig.
Curious to get some feedback/opinions on this setup (and pricing, it seems high but I have no clue).

A family friend is a dealer and speced out this setup for me:
  • I was going to do the 1.5" front leveling kit and then just do more aggressive tires and wheels. I just don't know enough about sizes, offsets, and tire clearances to make a judgment call.
  • I want it to look and drive like OEM+ as it's my daily driver, and I'd rather not have to cut off or remove anything from the body if possible.
  • I'm pretty handy and can do basic work. Is it worth paying someone to add the lift kit or is it pretty DIY friendly (I should just google that)

Thanks for your help, and thank you for allowing me to join the community!

Doing it yourself you would only save $1000. Seems like an ok price to me to install the lift balance and mount tires + alignment. From what I know lift kit is pretty easy to install but I’ve never done it personally on a 4Runner. Only installed a ford truck lift kit.

The TRD ORP is very capable stock. Have you actually encountered a scenario where you need a lift and beefier tires?

You're going to sacrifice a lot of day-to-day comfort and practicality for 2% off road, and you may never even need it.

My recommendation would be to enjoy the car stock for a while, get a feel of how far you actually want to push it off road. There's a good chance you realize the stock vehicle is plenty capable as-is while driving better as a daily, than it would be with a lift and more aggressive tires.

Yeah, it really stemmed from not really liking the factory wheels very much. I would prefer keeping it as stock as possible, it's just hard to gauge how far or not to take it and what a viable setup would be that would get me there.

I like the idea of not having to do a lift or level at all. It's already about as tall as I'd like to climb in or out.

Do you have any OEM+ wheel and tire recommendations that could avoid any suspension changes without breaking the bank?

You could fit 285/70/17 without rubbing on stock suspension

Since your in California like myself. To keep your factory warranty you have to have the work done at off road warehouse. Im getting a leveling kit installed its what everyone does in so cal.

You're making 98% of your driving worse with those tires. Gas mileage is going to plummet, dry handling will be worse, wet handling will be terrible, etc.

Also, Pre-load collars, while good for making it taller, are going to make it ride worse (stiffer).

I wouldn't necessarily say don't do the pre-load collar, as long as you're willing to trade off damper performance, but I would consider an A/T tire over an R/T, and maybe go down to a 285/75 which would equate to about 34" tire rather than the 35.

This what I have with M/T's plenty capable and not a huge hit to MPG. Been offroad a few times and the SR5 handled it with ease, pretty gnarly stuff stuff too. sheered off the "splash" plate, so I just installed a steel skid.

Use it as stock, at least until you need tires and then decide. At this point, you're throwing $5K away and not getting any resale value for that IMHO.

Your poll did not really have an option I would have picked. Maybe add "Leave as OEM setup".

I had a quote from the local Toyota dealer for the Westcott kit, they also recommended to recalibrate the radar system since the height of the vehicle will change in addition to the alignment.

Good info.... Should not be forgotten.
