Rear windshield wiper

Had to use my rear windshield wiper yesterday. I noticed it only went to about
7 o’clock. Is that what everyone is seeing or do I have an issue. Not very functional

I noticed the same thing. Would be nice if it went to at least 9'oclock.

I too used the rear wiper today. Its useless. My other vehicles were much better in coverage and speed. The coverage is the big issue.

unless driving in reverse during extreme downpour it doesn't need to go fast. The rear wiper on the 5th gen had the same coverage and speed.

Maybe folks need to adjust their rear view mirrors a bit to compensate for the fact that the 4R pivots from the top vs bottom. In 9 years of owning a 5th Gen I've never had any concerns and I'm impressed with the superb execution of the complicated mechanism that gives us a rear wiper plus a rear window that goes down

Should not need human adjustment. I have not complained about any rear wiper and I have driving hundreds of rentals. Its a Toyota oddity that is accepted by the owners because “thats how its always been”

Have you had any rear wiper that does what the 4Runner wiper does? How about submitting an engineering schematic of how you would make a retractable wiper that lifts off the window, hidden when not in use and be able to wipe 90 degrees across the glass since Toyota doesn't know how to do it right.

I would have hoped that Toyota would have improved the design and function after all these years. It really is pathetic.

I guess innovation is not a priority.

As a first time Toyota owner, my first two months have been disappointing from the sales and purchasing to initial customer satisfaction. We’ll see how the reliability is going forward.

I was all positive about getting a Tundra or Tacoma this year in addition to the 4R but those plans are on hold awaiting my first years satisfaction with the 4R.

I am hoping its great and I can ride it out for the planned 10 years, we will see.

The 4Runner wiper IS innovative. It was literally the first hidden rear wiper that lifts off the glass in a park position. GM copied the design later and so did Ford. None of them are able to make a full 90 degree sweep of the glass.

One of the reasons is probably that the wiper motor has to have a park retracted position and a run position which may limit its range of motion. When you turn on the 4R wiper it has to lower to the run position then start its sweep, this is probably why you think it's slow. These aren't limitations on a conventional rear wiper that just sits at the bottom of the glass, a simple design in comparison but very effective. Innovation sometimes means you have to make compromises.

Can you expand on why your disappointed with the new 4R? Honestly curious. I only have 1700 miles on mine and except for the too big steering wheel (in my opinion) and the electronics learning curve, I'm loving this thing.
