TRD Pro Vs Platinum

If cost was not a concern, would you pick the TRD Pro or Platinum?

I was very fortunate to get my TRD PRO and I absolutely love this thing for it's Off Road prowess and all of the off-road capabilities. I was initially drawn to the aggressive look and this thing is a beast. I have no plans to beat this thing up off roading it any time soon. I am still trying to get use to my shiny new toy, plus I haven't even engaged 4x4, rear locker or disconnected my sway bar yet. I have modified every vehicle I have ever owned to some degree, and it is refreshing to have finally found a vehicle that is pretty close to perfect. To be honest, I will be adding a few mods to this baby but I will keep it pretty simple and stock looking. I have some Westscott Designs rock sliders on the way and down the road I will be adding larger tires (Nitto Recon Grappler 295/70R18) to my stock wheels and possibly adding a Westscott pre-collar lift.

If you know you will be driving on road pretty much 100% of the time and never plan to drive on the beach, go mudding or rock crawling I would consider the Platinum. Having more color choices, full-time four-wheel drive, smoother ride and power running boards are all things to love. I think you may like the look of a smooth hood line too. Don't get me wrong I love the look of a hood scoop, but I wish they would have integrated the hood scoop into the hood a little cleaner like the 5th gen instead of just plopping this sharp-edged box on it. I would prefer a smoother scoop because this thing is in your face and holds water in all the grooves and channels. Would it kill Toyota to actually make a functional hood scoop? At least make it a heat extractor even though and true intake would have been a killer way to go.
Best of luck in your choice. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. If you are someone that doesn't modify your SUV's and just enjoy a daily driver that can do it all than the Platinum sound like the one.

Thanks for the reply. Adding photos doesn’t help my decision to go Platinum. lol. I like the ruggedness of the TRD. I’ve had Limited for 9 years and it’s time to go a little tougher. However, none of the benefits of the TRD will really be utilized. Where I live there is no way you are allowed anywhere near a beach with a vehicle.

I have added many ā€˜creature comforts’ to my Limited and like you, I hope not to have to do too much. Now it’s the waiting game.

Don't mistake the lack of "ruggedness" in the Gen 5 limited with the "ruggedness" in the Gen 6 Limited and Platinum. My Gen 5 2020 Limited was standard with the 20" wheel that limited the tires to a 245. 265 is the standard on the Gen 6 and can go wider and taller without modification. See the YouTube video conducting a skid test between a Gen 6 Limited and a Land Cruiser (Limited on stock tires). The articulation and ability of the luxury trim is stunning. My Platinum is the ultimate comfortable beast.

Thanks. Always great information. I’ve had no complaints with my Limited except that I felt it was a little too plain for my initial liking. I switched it up as much as I could without spending too much and relying on others to do the work for me. I don’t doubt I would be happy with the Platinum. The one marked up 10k is still for sale. It is good to see that the consumers are holding their ground to huge markups.

More are being allocated every day. You'll get your new ride without the insane markup by holding the line. Get the color you want, concede nothing for these prices!

You really have to consider your use case when deciding what you want, as the two will have VERY distinctly different driving characteristics. Based on what you described, the Platinum is 100% the best choice for you and remember...if you like things about the TRD Pro's appearance, those parts are available to you.

The TRD Pro is great, and it would be my ideal choice, but simply because I spend a decent bit of time off-road and like the refinement. The downside to the TRD Pro is that all of its on-road manners will be than the Platinum in every way. Wet weather handling, fuel economy, dry handling, etc. Not to mention those Fox shocks will need to be serviced every 60,000 miles or so, whcih means totally disabling your 4Runner on jackstands for a period of time.

I understand the appeal to the TRD Pro for most, but more often than not you'll find yourself less happy than you would have been in a different trim. And like I said, all of those TRD Pro appearance parts are available to you.

I shared this photos in another thread but tires can go along way on the platinum. Throw at nice set of bigger AT tires on it, still get all the platinum luxury/features with a beefier look! This was at a dealer in GA.
