Hello 4Runner folks! BEWARE. I just got back from a 1700 mile trip to the Rockies and did a lot of gravel riding, so the result : LOTS of great memories and rock chips on rear fenders and rear doors.
Ok I do have the factory mud guards and did imagine rock chips down low, but these are WAY up there.... Note that TRD running boards might save you there.... but not sure. TH rock rails do not stick out far enough to become a shield. I guess I might look at longer front flaps....
The plastic fenders got peppered bad ! o_Oo_O :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: --sorry photos are kinda poor...

All this might be a Trailhunter/ TRD PRO & Modified wheels setup issue.
Just throwing that out there..

I guess a good solution is to not wash the truck too often and they won't show up! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

How much poke does your tires have. I tried to keep mine as even to the flare as possible, I'm running a max 1/2" poke.

I run alot of gravel roads off roading also and so far have been lucky and haven't had any rocks hit the side, mud yes, and high up on the rear door, but so far no rocks. It's not so much while I'm off roading, these RTo1's love to hold those little rocks that come out doing 60 on the way home. lol

I was hoping that the Wescott sliders I have on order was going to take care of a little protection from rocks throwing up but maybe not.

I have a TH, so it has that extra wider track but the fenders are wider than TRD OR. Toyo tires. I'm pretty sure the rocks get launched from below not the side, meaning the mud guards are not long enough. Also the profile of the mud guards could be a bit wider too.. Tires are pretty flush with the flares.
Let us know how the Wescott sliders do in this subject once you get a chance to test them out.

Very typical early in the Tacoma launch until people discovered ppf, big mud flaps and side steps.

I have an ORP with stock tires and OEM mud guards/step platform. I’ve observed the 6th gen flinging gravel from day 1. I find small rocks on my steps, rear bumper platform and even on the roof sometimes after long gravel stretches on forest service roads. It’s absurd.

I never experienced this in 200k+ on my 5th gen with bigger tires and no mud guards.

Made a "temporary" solution..... from leftovers. Driveway engineering at best.

I noticed several dings and scratches pretty quickly after we bought the 4Runner. Seems like the paint is pretty soft. PPF might be worth the investment if you’re planning on keeping resale value on the paint.

Yes definitely worth the investment in PPF, but that's not in the cards for me right now. I might do a hood front section and that's all the wallet has for now.
I plan on driving this thing everywhere and for MANY yeas.... so I was ok with the wear and tear happening from the start. No resale value in my forecast.
Just posted this tread out there for anyone very concerned with the paint longevity. And yes you're right, it seems very soft...

I literally had my windshield cracked within the first 2 months of owning my 25 TRD Pro 4Runner. $1,200 new windshield. And $344 windshield tint (ceramic)
