Just upgraded my roof racks today.
Basically get a pry tool (I strongly advise using a flat head to prevent damage like I did smh) and pop the plastic caps off. If you use some finesse you can manipulate the caps with some force and pop them off without any tools. Under the caps is two bolts on the roof and the rest is self explanatory. Hopefully that helped

Didn’t read your question all the way sorry about that. I’m pretty sure the same roof racks are used with 5th gen so I’m assuming 5th gen plugs would work the same.

No worries. I see plenty of plugs for 5th gen. It would be great if they are universal but trying to confirm that.

Getting close to doing so to be honest. Maybe take one for the team.

I was looking into doing it to. The only thing I see being a problem is there will be a (4) 4 inch strip that does not have the black weather strip where the roof rails were.

I did this mod to my fifth gen 4runner, and the OEM kit came with plastic coverings. When I purchased the kit, it said it was also for other vehicles like Rav4's and highlanders for certain years. It might work but until Toyota confirms it will fit, I'm going to hold off on doing this.
