Just looking for a clear answer on the compatibility situation for skid plates between the two new generations of vehicles.
  • NYTOP vendor stated in another thread that the middle screw locations are different for Tacoma and 4R and therefore need a long slot to maintain compatibility with both vehicles.
The OEM ones and our NYTOP ones will fit because both are designed with a slotted hole in the middle crossmember area, to compensate for slightly different bolt hole locations between the Taco and the 4R. The RC one doesn’t look like it does. So most likely you will have to drill new holes for those ones to fit.
  • A number of Toyota dealership parts depts advertise the TRD Pro skid plate as being compatible with both vehicles. Some threads and posts on this forum that suggest cross-compatibility. Trailhunter skid also appears to not be slotted (at least, not in the requisite forward-aft direction, but only to facilitate easy removal/install)

  • Rival's skidplate includes slotted middle holes, but in addition to 4Runner and Tacoma it's also advertised for compatibility with LC250. Is that the source of confusion and the vehicle that actually needs it?

  • Greenlane has separate SKUs for Taco and 4R, but the pictures are identical, and middle holes appear not to be slotted.

  • RCI has identical pictures for Taco and 4R, but at a glance I'm not sure if they're doing their own proprietary thing towards the rear to link up with their own transmission plate.

So if anyone with Taco skid plates up and mounted on their 4Runner can chime in, that would be really appreciated. I'm really just interested in the Miller Cat and Rival skid plates because of the access holes for maintenance and because they don't cost $1000 or force me to buy the whole set.

LC250 and 4Runner are exactly the same underneath. The Tacoma has a slightly different hole location (indicated with red circle in the picture below), about less than 1 inch apart from the corresponding hole on the LC250/4Runner.

This 45° angled slot on the OEM TRD Pro skid plate is what allows it to fit on both platforms.

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like this one uses different middle holes altogether?
