This motor sounds bad. Is it an issue?

I love the 6th gen. It's got power and is much more drivable, but I can't get over the engine sound. Especially going up hill it just sounds like it is gargling nails.

To me it sounds like it's struggling a lot to the point where I don't know if it is an issue or just the nature of the 4cyl turbo beast.. Is everyone noticing this or does mine have some issue?

I found it curious that when I rev it in neutral (even at 3000-4000 RPM) it doesn't sound bad. Only when driving you almost get this clanky sound (especially when it is still warming up).

I attached two videos. One where I rev it in neutral (This sounds normal to me).

The other, I rev it in Drive while holding the brake (get some odd clanky sound added. Turbo?) I feel like that is what I hear (most likely) but of course at higher frequency in higher RPMs.

Do you have the artificial engine noise turned off? Are you running 93 octane gas?

The loud tapping you hear are the direct and port injectors. The reason you hear it more than other model 4R is due to having no sound deadening material on the underside of the hood.

I can't play either video. It plays the first half second then goes into perpetual "buffering" mode with the circular spinning arrow. Oh wait, there it goes (after about a 2-3 minute wait). Are these hosted by this forum?

Where is that to turn off?
Gotta get an OBD scanner/plug and use the Carista app to turn off fake engine noise

Though I'm not sure how that applies to OP since it's clearly recorded from outside, at the engine bay

Still, it sounds fine, DI motors make all kinds of noises. Does sound really diesel-y even for D-4S though. I kinda like it

Can you provide data that states that? Toyota state 87 oct
Don’t have any data sorry. I came from a lot of turbo charged cars and turbos typically benefit from higher octane gas to reduce engine knock. It’s kinda like a rule of thumb. Since I’m used to it with my other cars I always put 93 in my 4Runner. you don’t have to every fill up since the 4Runner is tuned for 87 from factory, but it’s nice to put some 93 every once and a while

Knock is hardly the same as injector noise though.......there are plenty of reasons to use premium gas including a not-insignificant hp/tq gain on T24A-FTS just from the gas alone, but saying that it reduces D-4S clatter is a somewhat novel claim

Waste of money running anything over 87, a dollar a gallon or more. Just change the oil at 5k intervals and everything will be ok

Loud injectors have been a known quantity in new generation direct injection engines since at least 2012 with the BMW N20.

91 is $0.60 more per gallon here than 85.

Easily worth it

I think your explanation is the most accurate! I also have this noise in my car. As long as you step on the accelerator pedal, you can hear this clicking sound. If you accelerate evenly, this sound is easy to hear as a continuous and stable low noise.
