I have read through as many threads as I can to determine how important the tow tech package would be for me since it's not easy to locate a 4Runner in desired model with desired specs otherwise. I have historically used the Curt Echo Bluetooth Wireless Brake Controller and love it. The connection to the app on your phone is slick, and you really just need to "set it and forget it," so contrary to some posts here, you do not need to have your phone constantly connected to it (unless you want to brake the trailer without pushing the brake pedal; you tap and hold a large red circle in the app to brake the trailer, but you really only need to do this once to get to the desired settings). Yes, you need to open the app on your phone to adjust the settings, but I don't seem to need to adjust the settings. That is the only reason for the bluetooth connection. Other than that, I do wonder if I will miss the digital rearview mirror and straight path backup guide, but I do not tow often enough to be concerned with this as far as I can see. Anyway, the main point of my post is to say that the integrated trailer brake controller that comes with the Tow Tech Package is overrated in my opinion. Feel free to offer input if you like!

Thanks for sharing, considering this or the Prodigy RF. I think with this Bluetooth setup, i’ll use a spare phone dedicated to avoid issues during a phone call.

I use the echo also. My or hybrid didn't come with the tow package. I used the echo with or 2023 or also. Works fine. I also own the prodigy but don't want to mount the box to my rv. I used to use it with a utility trailer.

There is a bluetooth button you can use with the echo. https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/CURT/C83HR.html

I really don’t think a spare phone is necessary. Most of the time, I don’t even have the Curt Echo app open. Not needed if you’re happy with the settings. Push your brake pedal, and the trailer brakes activate. It’s that simple. The app is ONLY to set your desired settings. You can use the app before each trip if you like.

If you’d spend all that money on a 4Runner in general. Why not ensure it has the tow tech package? 🤷🏽‍♀️

I hear you. If I towed more than 3-4 times per year, I’d probably think otherwise. Also, it’s basically impossible to get the color, specs, etc. that I want and also have the tow tech. And frankly, the Curt Bluetooth is great, so I won’t miss that part. That was my point. The integrated brake controller is overrated.

you don't "order" a 4runner. a dealer will find one close to what you want. the tow tech package would have been nice, but not a requirement. we tow all the time, the echo works fine just like it did on our 5th gen we had.
