I figure this is as good a place as any to ask this given some of the nice watches I've seen here. I don't own any nice watches (I wear an Apple Watch daily) so I don't know anything about how to shop for one.

I'm in the market for a skeleton watch (where you can see the internals moving from the front face). I would probably still wear my Apple Watch daily, but this watch would be for fancy/dress up occasions. Budget is the low 4 figures.

Any suggestions on what to look for in terms of materials, types of movement, etc.? Since I would rarely wear this, my thinking is a watch that is manually powered might be better, since a battery would probably die before I have a chance to wear it that many times? Is that misguided? Does manual powered make it more expensive? I don't mind winding it up everytime I want to wear it, since this would probably only be a couple times a year.

Any brand suggestions or specific models that you guys know about?

How to shop for one? Online? Macy's? A store that specializes in watches?

Thanks for your guidance.

Anyone else like Franck Muller? My day to taday is a swatch, with a vintage Rolex for lunches and a Muller for fun. The face reminds me of White Rabbit from Surrealistic Pillow. I got the Swatch at the duty free Swatch shop coming home from Zurich once and have replaced the band many times

Have a few others but these two seem to get all the wrist time for the last couple years. Glad I got them before things got stupid!

Been trying to get my hands on a batman every since they came out - in every country I've stopped in I've checked out the dealers - shelves are bare! and I refuse to pay the online premiums for one...

You can get a bunch of battery powered watches but he whole point of a skeletal watch should be to see the automatic movement - this is a decent enough list for different price points https://teddybaldassarre.com/blogs/watches/best-skeleton-watches

Since you mention dressy, would look at a Frederique Constant High life or Open heart as well - will be slimmer and smaller than most skeletal watches which tend to be larger sized

I have an unfashionably small skeleton watch which is also thin, overall just a fraction bigger than the movement. I bought it decades ago though and you don't see small slim watches much in these days of huge watch fashion.

I like it a lot but haven't seen anything like it new for a long time.

Chrono24 web site has lots of new and used watches you can look at to get an idea of prices.

1. Find a watch with a mechanical movement if you want a skeletonized watch, either an automatic self-winder, or a manual wind movement

2. Skeletonized watches tend to be pricier than their not see-through counterparts

3. Use a watch buying website like Chrono24 to get an idea of what skeletonized mechanical movement watches fall in your budget, here's a link to get you started
