I don’t have any empirical data to back this up, but my dealership pushed several warranty packages on me pretty heavily which makes me think it’s a profit center for them and chances are we’re the suckers.

Get a quote from your dealer for the extended warranty, put that same money in a relatively stable investment and use it as your own personal extended warranty fund as needed in the future. Of course, all insurance is a "bad deal" until you need it, but it's all a numbers game. The probabilities will always work in the favor of the insurance company. If you generally have the funds to pay for potentially painfully large future repair costs, better off forgoing the extended warranty, saving money yourself and take your chances.
