Hey guys, I’m interested in a Cayenne 2021. The dealership is selling me an extended warranty for $11k (10yr/100k miles). I’ve no idea what a good frame of reference here is since I’ve usually only leased cars before (other than my 911s) and this is my first buy that I want to keep longer term. Is this right? Or is this too expensive? I’m in SoCal (LA county)

Thanks

Read very carefully what the extended warranty covers. In my experience sometimes they don’t cover a lot of the stuff you might expect.

Ty, Yeah I've gone through it and it's pretty comprehensive. It's just the cost that's throwing me off vs the fact that the extended runs concurrently with the Porsche factory warranty (4yr/50k) for a new vehicle which means it's essentially a 6yr/50k extension. Is that worth $11k? Just wondering if any other Porsche buyers have been quoted similar amounts.

Can't you always buy it after 4 years just before the end of the original warranty? Why buy it now? At that point you will know if you want to keep the car for that long.

That was my understanding but they insist it will cost quite a bit more then. I'm not sure if that's true. Going to call a couple of other dealers to cross check.

There are dealers reported in this forum trying to sell very expensive 4 year maintenance plans for the Taycan while the car needs only brake fluid and cabin air filter replacement every 2 years.

Btw the battery is covered by 8 year factory warranty.

That seems a bit excessive for warranty period and $ for me. Looks like they get a lot of pressure to sell these type of packages to maximize $ made on sale. I’d ask if this is transferable to another owner if you decide to sell it. At lease that would add to the value of the car If you did decide to sell it privately before the end of the extended warranty.

True enough. It is transferable and also can be cancelled with a pro rated refund at any time according to them. I've reached out to a couple of other dealerships. My understanding was $5k to $7k for Porsche's platinum extended.

that is pure profit for the dealerships, usually you can buy such a policy right up until the original warranty expires. I would wait until then to see if you want to keep the car after having it a few years.
I'd be wary of a porsche dealer that hard sold such a policy, that is something common at lower end dealerships

That seems too expensive. I bought the Porsche Platinum 100000 mile warranty for $4K for my Taycan. What they’re seeing you looks like a rip off to me.

Always remember that the F&I office is the #1 profit center in a U.S. car dealership. Anything you buy there has an enormous profit margin, which is why the F&I manager is typically the highest paid employee at the dealership. Most U.S. customers gird for battle over the sales price, think they've "won", and then get suckered with the equivalent of checkout lane ripoffs in the F&I office. Check out the prior thread on this topic for advice on extended warranties that are not a ripoff:
