This week, we drove our 4S to a well known destination for us, Kelowna BC. This involves some actual mountains. Some pictures posted in the Frozen Blue photos thread.

Here is the profile of the part between Hope BC and Kelowna (trip planner in Plugshare has this graph). From sea level, peaking at 5700ft (1700m). Total driven distance, 162 miles, which is a few miles longer than this graph.

The scary part is that first 30 miles used 30% of my battery at 110-130kmh. The rest of the trip only used another 30%, at the same speeds. From the peak to our destination, we used zero net battery - almost 30 miles for 'free'.

Total trip consumption was 2.8 miles/kwh, where my long distance, freeway speed trips tend to be 3.1-3.3 miles/kwh.

On the return, I averaged 1.2 miles/kwh to the peak, and again 2.8 miles/kwh overall.

The Porsche planner was pretty spot on with the expected range on this trip too, even with the unusual elevation challenges.

Map of this part of the route.

It's good to know that the car can do the mountains and how it behaves.

I haven't seen your Macan 4S around Kirkland, but I've been out of town most of the year.

I never had to be concerned with elevation differences in ICE vehicles, but it plays a huge role in EVs because of shorter vehicle range. I keep an elevation app on my phone to check and see if there's big elevation changes along my route between DCFC stops. A few thousand feet difference can easily mean +/- 10% to range that leg, or more.

A good example here in Colorado is the I-70 drive from Dillon up to the Eisenhower Tunnel and down to Denver. The 10 mile climb up to the tunnel uses 8% (in just 10 minutes). The 50 miles down uses 0%.

This route always needed planning for fuel in my ICE car too. There is nothing between Hope and Merrit, and again from there to Westbank

Being able to do the full 300 mile trip in 1 stop in Hope without caring about speed was great. More reliable 200kw+ chargers are needed on this route though to make it consistent.
