I have had another serious issue related to battery charging and range.
On Saturday afternoon I left home in San Francisco to travel to Cupertino for two different meetings, and then back up to Palo Alto for dinner; so about a 50 mile distance. Battery charge was in the high 50% to low 60% battery level before I left. I had planned on topping off during dinner. I did not take notice of the battery range estimate before leaving home.
As I started driving I was loosing around 1% per mile on average. I had dropped more than 15% in under 20 miles from my house. The degrading of the battery % and milage was so great that I did not think I would make it to my first stop; and there are limited services along this particular strip of route 280. I eventually had to program the car to find the nearest charging station off of 280. It was located in Crystal Springs.
When I started to charge at the fast 350kW charger at EA, I was only pulling between 16-20kW max. There was no one else charging at this EA facility, and I tried three different chargers, but all were pulling in the same low <20kW range.
Above: 29% battery showing only 39 mile range.
Because I had to stop, and the battery was charging so slowly, I missed my first appointment. I charged the battery to 60% and made my way to my second stop, where I knew I could find slow chargers.
A few miles into that second leg of the trip, the battery % and range continued to drop significantly. I lost 12% battery in less than five miles.
Above: 48% battery and 59 mile range after charging and on the way to my second meeting.
I let the battery charge at the slow charger to 75% (note only 107 mile range at 75% battery above), and then made my way to dinner in Palo Alto where I parked in a public garage with slow chargers.
After dinner the app notification indicated that the car had fully charged to "100%" as programmed. When I got to the car (above) the battery was at 98% and showing a 118 mile range.
By the time I got home the battery had dropped to 73% with a 105 mile range; so not as severe a degrading as on the trip down.
My car had the VR28.13 update last November (per the dealership), and another software update in February if I recall, for a slow charging issue.
I brought the car to the dealership on Monday, and now they are performing a new software update VR28.13 SQ5, which I was told was just released last Monday.
Stay tuned.
