Hey guys, hope you’re well. Greetings from Australia. Keen to get your thoughts on something. I am coming from a BMW X3 M40i, which I bought in 2022. With the straight six twin turbo the car offers plenty of punch off the line (well, in any situation. Very responsive and effortless delivery). However I’ve always dreamed of owning a Porsche (stilling pining for a manual 911 - maybe someday). So I went to check out a new outgoing ICE Macan (S and GTS) and despite its ever refined Porsche-ness, I was struck by how sluggish it felt out of the gate. I then drove the Macan EV (4), which the dealer was pushing me into given my polite but frank critique of the ICE - and I was surprised that both the Tesla model 3 and Polestar 4 (had driven recently but wouldn’t buy) felt WAY more responsive in terms of power delivery. The dealer told me to come in and check out the newly arrived Macan EV S yesterday, which I had high hopes for based on paper performance… but it still didn’t feel as alive off the line as other EVs. And that includes the pedestrian on paper Polestar 4 single motor - which felt light on its feet and punchy despite the weight). Am I missing something here?!!! Maybe I am living in a matrix of my wife’s creation to ensure I don’t spent a fortune on a new car I really don’t actually need. Welcome any thoughts. I feel like I am trying to talk myself into a $110k USD Porsche now, which is kind of odd for a car that should sell itself based on emotion. Tell me I am crazy if appropriate. Please. How are you guys finding your S’s?
Didn’t test out the other trims, as we tested the turbo right from the start and went with that. Turbo blows every other option right out of the water… fast, handles like a much smaller car and is relatively well priced. The others (Grecale, Urus etc.) offers not much more (if any) for more cash.

We tested Model 3 and Polestar as well but didn’t like Tesla’s handling and (on Y) it’s non-existent suspension. The Tesla rep actually recommended we get an after market suspension! Might as well add a signal stalk, massage seats, HUD whilst we are at it eh? Hah! Polestar was also great value but the screen was laggy at times which I feel is not acceptable esp for a car with a digital/techy rear mirror.

Agreed we have a model Y performance and a quad motor Rivian R1T all do some 0-60 on 3-3.5s. The Porsche Macan turbo gets well over the speed limit so much faster than what I’m used to with either the Tesla or the Rivian. Tesla does tend to put all the torque right from the start which makes it feel faster but the way Porsche is mapping throttle is more enjoyable.

The trick with the 4s is to floor it and hold it there. I know it sounds obvious but the gas pedal has quite a lot of space so if you don’t actually commit to going fully flat to the floor you wont realize how quick it really is.

I never bother with launch control or racing off the lights because that’s not the kind of driver I am but floor it when you are going any speed above 15mph and you’ll be shocked how quick the 4s is.

I don't think you are actually trying the acceleration. I have a 4S. What I have found is that the accelerator pedal is very gradual unless you really punch it.. in which case, it will trend towards 'close to whiplash'. I have a friend who has a Tesla model 3, he warned me about the differences in acceleration on EV's (I used to drive a Macan S ICE).. however, I found that he was wrong .. the engineers at Porsche designed the acceleration to be more gradual so you wouldn't make people car sick (like his car does to his wife) nor accidentally crash into someone in front of you because you had no clue as to what you were doing. Believe me, this car is not quite as fast as the turbo but it makes my Macan S look slow and matches my 911 4S quite nicely if I push it. On the other hand, for day to day driving, it's fantastic! Of course, you have to live with the periodic bizarre software quirks.. but frankly, they haven't affected my driving at all. Oh yes, you have to WANT to drive.. no FSD for me. That's why I bought a Porsche and not a Tesla. Happy motoring!

Speed can be subjective and somewhat deceptive based on power delivery and operating environment. As others have found, there is a lot more play in the Macan pedal than Tesla Y e.g. Also, the Macan's suspension and quieter interior can serve to insulate you to speed. I'm amazed at how many times I'm already at 80+ entering a freeway (My S is less than a month old....excitable boy they all said). Compare the stated performance specs against each other for a more objective assessment. And if you're not a diehard/gotta have a Porsche buyer, or if you have difficulty with the premium (or your wife does), consider the new Y Juniper. From early reviews suspension, handling and noise reduction have been greatly improved.

I think everyone’s need for speed is different. I like the ramp up of my Macan 4 way better than the jolt and drive experience I got with my model Y for daily driving. I like launch off the line as an option rather than all the time. That said it sounds like you are more of a Turbo customer but maybe the S in sports + with the sound option would be the ticket. I heard people really love the Turbo so maybe give it a go. That is just for straight acceleration. I do notice that even with my Macon 4 handling around corners at speed is way better than my model Y. The body roll difference is really noticeable

@clyats: that's a strange post. i still have an ice macan turbo and an brandnew ev 4s. i don't know what cars you've driven, but your impressions are absurd. that's so far from reality. apart from that, there are facts: power, speed and torque. and then there are "little things" like brakes, steering and suspension.

My 'ship' finally came in - and I got to pick up the 4S yesterday. So - I thought I would share some thoughts - as I had been thirsting for information from 4S owners.
Congrats! I went back and forth between the 4 and the 4S but ultimately decided the extra range was more important to me than the one second quicker to 60 MPH, so ordered the 4. Mine is on the ship, just northwest of Cuba headed for the port in Galveston, TX. Should be delivered by mid-March or so. I'm really looking forward to it and hope I don't regret skipping the 4S in the future,
