A few days ago I had a puncture on the side wall of my tyre. I then learnt that

1) we don’t have run flat tyres and
2) you cannot use the gunk/compressor when the damage is on the side wall.

Thankfully (by a miracle) no damage to my 22in Spyder wheel. Phew!

So - now I’m considering carrying a spare tyre if I’m travelling far. Ideally a lighter wheel/tyre combo to get me to the next place to properly repair/replace the tyre, sort of skinny version of the real thing.

My situation happened after a long drive in the rain and dark at 10pm - thankfully I had only just arrived at my destination (hotel). The incident happened literally in front of the hotel thankfully. I still had to wait around 4 hours between calling the AA rescue, they called the tyre specialist , tyre being located and sourced, and tyre man coming over at around 2am. I really don’t want to go through this again, especially if this is at night, on a motorway….

So, any recommendations/thoughts (other than “don’t damage the tyre” 😂?

Thank you!

I am also interested in this topic, I have had a few EV's with no spare tire and gone through the same frustration as you.

I learned quickly that having a full size spare wheel/tire can save lots of aggravation. My use case is that I leave it at home and generally don't venture beyond 50 miles from home on a typical basis and would just get an uber home or have a family member bring the wheel to swap allowing me the convenience to get the tire repaired or replaced on my schedule without any down time or the need for a tow. On any longer trip I would carry the full size spare with me.

It is important to know that in case of buying a full size spare, on a car with staggered wheels, you should get a spare in the size/width of the front wheel which will work both in front and back. A spare rear wheel will not fit on the front of the car as it is too wide.

Historically I have purchased a used OEM front wheel and had the TPMS and tire installed and stored it in my garage.

I have been on the search for a used wheel for the Macan for my soon to be delivered Macan 4S and unsurprisingly have been unsuccessful. I may choose to add an extra wheel to the transaction when I go collect my new car, but not sure yet.

I have been in search of evidence that a Taycan wheel would fit on the Macan which would make my life easier as I already have one at home, but so far it seems that it is likely not compatible due to a markedly different offset, but more research is needed on this. Of course used Taycan wheels are easy to come by if it is indeed compatible and I can source the correct sized tire for the Macan fitment.

As for a space saving temporary solution I have no information as the Macan and Q6 e-tron are not listed on any of the vendors that have these items that I can find.

I do think that having a spare of some type is crucial as I have not had a good feeling with using the tire foam/goop with the compressor as it seems too questionable to me and does not give me confidence.

The challenge is that Porsche has used a new bolt pattern and hub bore for the their EV's as compared to the other vehicles in their lineup.

Sourcing a used wheel for the Q6 E-tron would be another option, but still likely tough to find this early in their production run.

I will be hoping for insight from others as well.

This is great info thank you so much - I hadn’t considered that a back wheel would not fit the front wheel arch. now it’s obvious! Thank you! From what you are saying I think buying a front wheel & a capable jack would probably resolve my issue.

I already have a spare front tyre (Continental - which is tyre that the tyre man sourced overnight and replaced the original damaged Goodyear).

I ended up buying another Goodyear (I didn’t want different tyres on a brand new car) and kept the sourced Continental when Porsche replaced it.

I guess I now need…

1) a jack capable of lifting a 2.4 ton car
2) a Porsche 22 in wheel….

unless someone has a cheaper solution….

thank you

One other thing to be aware of when keeping a spare wheel/tire combination around is that today's tires have directional treads, so there's a 50/50 chance of having it mounted correctly. Add to that the fact that the front and rear use different wheel and tire sizes, and carrying a spare tire is really becoming impactical. That's probably why Porsche doesn't attempt to provide a spare.

Thank you. I appreciate that. However, this would be a temporary solution to get me going. No different to the usage of a space saver wheel.

Yes, so here is the Jack that I got for use with my Taycan : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08TBWMZZW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I still need to confirm the type of jackpoints on the Macan, assuming it is the same as the Taycan, these will be useful :
https://creative-steel.com/shop/porsche/taycan/porsche-jack-pads/?attribute_amount=Pair

or these :

As for sourcing a spare wheel at a reasonable price, that is the challenge.

Keep in mind, for temporary use, you could get a 20", 21" or 22" front wheel with the corresponding correct OEM tire size respectively as the overall diameter of the wheel and tire will be identical and can be run safely. ie 20" wheel with correct tire size for that wheel will be the same diameter as your 22" wheel and tire combo. I would not do unrestricted Autobahn on that setup, but for temporary use until the original wheel is repaired it should be fine just as a compact spare is usually fine.

thank you! You’re an absolute star!
I’ll be looking to see if a 20 in tyre + rim will be cheaper than using my own 22 in t plus a new rim.

I’ll be looking at jacks now.

thank you so very much! And Happy New Year to you and please do send pics of your beautiful new ride when you have it ok?

and if ever in London please do say hi!

BTW - I’ll be looking tomorrow at the jackpoints on my car…. I’ll post a picture.

I hope the tyreman didn’t damage anything when jacking up the car in the dark ! I guess the folks at Porsche would have told me, but you never know…. 😒

I don’t know if these are the jack points but these are the holes on the underside of the car near the wheels….

are those it? They each seem to have an indentation next to them. Maybe I should be looking for something else :)

It's interesting that they used a textured composite surface for the underside of the car. I thought it would be mostly smooth to help airflow.

I guess this is only around the edges of the underside. I’ll check tomorrow again and will try to take a picture deeper under the car!

I don't get the feeling that those are the jackpoints, typically Porsche uses a rectagular plastic trimmed housing just behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheels just below the doors near the outer edge of the frame. Appreciate the pictures, and I could be wrong, but will hopefully be able to look myself as well next week.

Got it! I am sure I photographed the wrong thing - these could be water escape holes…. I will look tomorrow again during daylight (it’s 9.38pm here).

Right…. I finally got it - and you’re right - it’s a rectangular jack head…and no damage to my car by the tyre man.

And under the car there’s some sort of metal sheet protecting everything - the composite material is just around the edges!
