Hi everyone,
I wanted to write a post to share how I troubleshooted a rattle coming from my passenger door side and resolved it, in case this helps anyone else.
I noticed a rattling sound coming from the passenger side when I was playing music. First I played an audio sweep to try to identify the frequency causing the rattle (I used this video from YouTube). Once the offending frequency is identified, then you can just search for a longer version of that tone (for me, the rattle was happening at 60hz, so I just searched for something like "60hz test tone" and found a 1 min clip).
Once the frequency can be identified, then it's easy to take it to a service center and reproduce the issue on the spot (I've always been cursed where if an issue is not 100% reproducible, then it never occurs when I need it to lol).
I decided to try to troubleshoot it myself before going through the trouble of taking it back to the dealership, so I started by poking and prodding various parts of the door while the 60hz test tone played on repeat lol.
I originally thought the rattle was coming from the armrest on the door, which in retrospect, was extremely dumb because how can leather-on-leather contact create rattling . Finally, after an embarrassingly long time, I realized the issue was coming from where the leather interior was touching the metal door frame (see attached picture).
I then cut up some acoustic foam (I happened to have this lying around) and shoved it into the gap using a pry tool. If you take a close look at the attached picture, you can see some of that foam sticking out. I then played the audio sweep again, and rattling was no longer there! One thing to note is that I don't think the acoustic foam will be easy to remove once it's shoved inside; not that I think there will be any scenario where I will need to remove it, but just wanted to raise that as a potential concern.
Hope this helps anyone who is also experiencing rattles as even a little bit of rattling really ruins the vibes of any song I'm listening to. Thanks and let me know if you have any thoughts/questions!
