the 10 foot version will give you more freedom - and you don't need to wire up the neutral wire (white wire) - don't do this if your not comfortable with DIY projects - have an electrician hardwire it
but the universal tesla charger is pretty well designed and easy to wire up and install…this cord is a plug on one end, and the bare wires on the other to "hardwire" into the Tesla Universal Wall Charger dock…
- order the TUWC
- wait for it to arrive
- budget 2-4 hours
- turn off the circuit breaker to the NEMA 14-50 socket
- unplug & unmount your old tesla charger
- mount the TUWC "dock" unit
- wire up the cord from amazon (just the bare wires end) - do not plug it in yet
- clip off the round metal ends from the 4 wires
- strip the back wire back about 1/2" to 3/4" an inch
- wire the black wire to L1 in the dock
- wire the red wire to L2 in the dock
- wire the green wire to Ground in the dock
- tighten down the lug nuts to make sure the wires are secure - follow torque instructions
- wire-nut the white wire - it's unused
- mount the TUWC onto the dock
- plug it in
- turn on the circuit breaker - make sure nothing shorts
- if the TUWC boots up and you have green light you're mostly good
- connect to the TUWC webportal with a webbrowswer and configure it for a 50 amp breaker 40 amp charge rate - it defaults to 48 amps (60 amp breaker) this is wrong for your setup.

each wire corresponds to one of the metal connectors/blades on the plug…
Red wire is blade L1 or L2 - 120V hot
Black wire is blade L2 or L1 (opposite of Red) - 120V hot
White wire is the the "neutral" blade - 3 o'clock position in this picture - not used for this application
green wire is ground - the round connector in this picture
Red is 120V power
Black is 120V power
White is neutral (unused for EVSE applications)
Green is ground
the TUWC dock has three barrels you insert the bare ends of the wire into and then use screws/lugs to secure the wire inside the connection-barrels…
you'll need to strip back some of the "black" insulation encasing the 4 wires to give the 4 wires more length to fit them into the dock connections - be very very very careful to strip back the black insulation but not nick/strip the insulation on the encased 4-wires…you'll lose 1 to 1.5 ft of wire "inside" the dock to route the wires and secure them to the dock's connection points…
we're just exposing greater wire length to allow you to insert the wires into the TUWC dock and have enough slack/length to get the wires into the dock and attach them to the dock connectors…
