Max Performance summer tire compound gets hard below 0C more or less, loses grip, and can be dangerous. From what I've been told, the max performance is the summer option in the US and you get the safer AS performance tires standard. Dunno what you get elsewhere.

Yeah totally. You don't want summer tires as standard in any place where it freezes (which probably leaves Hawaii, Southern Florida, and Southern California), so it makes total sense.

I optioned the 21" summer (not the 22" performance summer) and got the Michelin Pilot Sport EV. I swapped them for Pilot Alpin 5 for the winter.

That’s true for the US, not the case worldwide.

You are correct, it is country/market specific.
  • In Europe, many (all?) countries offer Summer by default and All Season tires are extra.
  • In the US, All Season are offered by default with Summer replacement at no additional cost.
Ah, yes, appreciate the clarification.

Not OEM but I put on 20" Alpin 5 Winter tires and really enjoy them. Quite excellent performance today in cold but above freezing temperatures with some moisture.

Quiet, consistent, nice tires!

Agreed! I didn't know what to expect, but they've been perfect in super cold weather (-20ºC / -4ºF) so far: low noise, grippy, and predictable.

My car just arrived at the dealer. It has Michelin Pilot Sport 4 all seasons on it. What do others think of theirs?

I had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 tires on my Tesla and thought they provided great handling. Only downside is that they got a bit noisy after about 20K miles and don’t get anywhere near the 45K mile warrantied life due to the extra weight of EVs.

I have Pirelli Scorpion MS ELECT tires on my 4S. They are a relatively new EV tire with no mileage warranty and few formal reviews/ratings. They seem very quiet and so far received favorable comments from a few Macan EV owners, other than being even more expensive than Michelins to replace.

Hi I had a couple noob questions about tires 😅

1) the owners manual says to only have Porsche center do tire replacement — is that actually something people follow? Or can I go to a tire store or Costco to do this work? I think it’d be cheaper

2) I have the 4S and tires are staggered so is there any need to do tire rotations? Owners manual doesn’t mention it but ChatGPT says it’s still recommended to do rotations where they swap the tires on same axle.

3) assuming rotations are not needed, do I just need to monitor tire tread and replace the tires when the tire tread indicator shows? Roughly how many miles can I expect out of the pirelli scorpions?

thanks!

I would only us a shop that you trust won't scratch/damage the wheels

I use any well reviewed shop. It's just a tire and they all use the same tools.

Frankly I'd be less surprised if a Porsche dealership scratched my tire than a well reviewed independent shop. Independent shops rely on good reviews/quality for business. Porsche doesn't care.

My Macan 4S was just delivered with Pirelli PZero Elect summer tires on 22" wheels.

I have the same on my Taycan and have been very happy. To be honest I am a Michelin man, and expected to dislike these Pirelli's, but have been surprisingly satisfied such that I replaced them with the same tire on my Taycan as supposed to switching to Michelin's. I only have a need for Summer tires where I live.

When I asked my (well reviewed) local shop the likelihood that they would damage the wheel, they told me it was rare, but they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't happen. When I went to Porsche, they told me their machine never touches the wheel.

After searching a bit, it looks like common tire changing machines are manual and sometimes need to make contact with the wheel, while high-end machines don't touch it at all. It doesn't have to be done at Porsche though.

That's good to know! I'm not a big fan of the Michelin Pilot Sport EV so far, so I will look at Pirelli when time comes.
