Obviously, this experience has me thinking and planning. On a long trip would taking the wall charger along and looking to a campground with 50amp service for larger campers, to be an emergency option?

I always take mine on trips just in case. Other than plugging in at my parents place I have never had to use it. It does carry piece of mind tho

I guess it had to happen, eventually! We turned in our 4S for a software update (scary I know) and noticed the loaner only had a small charge. We added some at home and left for a 70 mile trip with 112 miles range indicated. In about 6 miles that dropped to 85 miles but we checked the planner and it showed a couple of high speed charging options near our destination so in order to make our appointment we pressed on.

Appointment completed, we headed to option one for charging - nothing there! Option two had four stations all out of order. We started searching and the nearest options were 23 or 25 miles away and we were indicating range of 22 miles!

Well, we searched for the nearest Porsche dealer and that was way far away. Then we hit on the idea of calling the nearby Mercedes dealer and asking where the nearest charging station was. 20 minutes of helpful on line searching by the receptionist yielded nothing. Finally, I asked “where do you charge your EVs?” She checked with her boss, he told her to invite us over and we could use their charger for free. It was a DC charger so it took an hour but got us home.

my biggest fear, sorry that happened to you. I've noticed how the charge can drop by big numbers, sometimes 30 m. at a time.

It is a great idea to travel with a mobile charger. I bought a second for this purpose.

The camp site would need to have a NEMA 14-50 outlet. You can verify this in advance with the campground’s website or an appropriate app such as Allstays https://apps.apple.com/us/app/allstays-camp-rv-camping/id370820516

I just want to add that I think the dealer did you a disservice by letting you leave with a loaner that had little charge. That should not have happened, IMHO

Exactly as TRP stated. The problem was not, is not, with the car but with the dealer not properly taking care of their customer.

My Porsche dealer made sure after they serviced it to add more electrons to it knowing I did not live close to them.

On that particular day, for whatever reason, they were out of loaners. The service writer left and came back with a license plate and a brand new car! I am sure he did not think to check charge level but he was definitely in customer service / problem solving mode.

Range displayed is dynamic so range estimated with very few miles at very low speed rapidly adjusted down as I left the dealership and drive at higher speeds.

Hey, just want to make sure that any of my comments are not to demean you or imply you screwed up in any way. We are all learning to manage these situations.

Sound like the dealer did you a solid by grabbing a new car and just didn't think to check it's charge. EVs are new to most manufacturers and they have a steep learning curve as well.

Never took it any other way than additional input. We all need to consider that we are early adopters of this technology. As such we will have bumps in the road on our side and Porsche will have theirs. We pay a price for being the first to enjoy this car and introduce it to others who are less risk tolerant.​
