The believe the system is designed to assist in parking between cars etc. as it’s assumed the driver doesn’t need assistance to park in open spaces.
It uses acoustics not just the cameras so cannot identify any open spaces.
Audi developed a full self parking system (allegedly) some time ago but I suspect the insurance industry said no. There is a stunning video of it here -
Having had remote parking on my previous Mercedes and Lexus I really miss it on the Macan. It’s strange that it is an option on the Taycan but not the Macan. That said, Lexus deleted the App required for it in Europe for some reason. Remote Parking is really useful if some clown parks too close so you can’t open the door wide enough.
