Hi everyone,

was hoping to get some advice about a rattle I’ve observed recently.

I scheduled a service appointment for this week after I started hearing a rattle last week coming from the dashboard. it sounds like a loose part or screw has fallen off and is rolling around.

the rattle is really hard to reproduce. I’m guessing most of the time, it’s stuck in a rut or something. When it’s freely rolling around it’s super obvious, like I’ll make a turn and I can hear it rolling for like 2-3 seconds from one side to the other.

here is my question: since I haven’t found a way to reliably reproduce the rattle, i was wondering if there’s anything I do to prepare for the service visit?

additionally, how firm should I be with the service center if they cannot reproduce the issue and is unwilling to help resolve the issue? If my theory is correct that there’s a fully loose part in the dashboard, it should be easy to identify if they open up the dashboard — the problem is that they told me it’s a very complicated process to open the dashboard and so will need to hear a rattle first.

thanks in advance!

My expertise is even with reproduction of the noise they don’t do a good job resolving rattles. Not being able to reproduce it won’t be to your benefit, I would assume they’ll say if they can’t reproduce it there’s nothing for them to evaluate.

I would at least take a video when it's happening so you can play it for them so they have some idea what it sounds like. If you can isolate where exactly in your dash the sound is coming from, stick some painters tape down... anything you can do to zero in their hunt would I'm sure be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update. I did a ride-along test with an advisor and he showed me that sound can travel weirdly (i.e., where you think the rattle is coming from may not be where the rattle is actually coming from).

Based on his observations during the drive, he guessed that the rattle was coming from the overhead console (prior to the ride-along, i was 100% certain it was coming from the dashboard).

Once he mentioned the overhead console, I realized that maybe I had knocked something loose as I was installing the FitCamX (which requires removing part of the overhead console to install).

I asked if I could drive the car home and take a look at the console myself instead of leaving it at the service center and they said ok.

Sure enough, once I opened it up, I found the loose part rolling around. Ironically, I think Porsche includes this part to prevent rattles haha. I think it's supposed to cover a hard-plastic part and prevent it from rattling against a neighboring hard-plastic part (someone please fact-check me on this if I'm totally wrong on the purpose of this thing lol).

All in all, this was an illuminating service trip where I got to learn about the illusion of sound. And, pretty cool to see Porsche's attention to detail in even something as mundane as the overhead console.
