Yesterday, on a 200+ mile interstate trip we encountered a traffic delay of a little over an hour pretty much standing still and no exit options. With 100 miles range remaining we were not concerned but that hour got me thinking, what is the battery drain while sitting still with a/c running (83F ambient temp), is there a built in reserve when these cars indicate “O” range, and what options would we have if, for some reason beyond our control, we ran out of charge.

I saw the range go down 4 miles during the hour.. so that might answer the first question.

If you run out if juice it’s the same as in an ICE — you’re not going anywhere.

Having said that, I would rather be in an EV than an ICE while stuck in a traffic jam. Energy consumption will be limited to what’s necessary to keep the car on, plus whatever convenience consumers (heat or A/C, radio etc.) are on. In an ICE that would require the engine to run, which consumes substantially more energy than what is needed.

But there are many stories of people who froze to death in their ICE cars in a snowstorm. The post says 4Mi/hour. Thats 0,1KW/hour for "convenience". This will provide heat for days...

I am not sure running the a/c would fully deplete the battery, but I guess it depends on the level of charge, the ambient temperature and the length of time.

More importantly, different EV manufacturers address the actual level of charge when the car shows 0% charge: Tesla (and I believe, Kia) have significant buffers, but the German manufacturers, less so. That is, when the Porsche says 0%, it means (close to) 0%. You may get a little extra distance, especially because regen continues to work.

This has been show in real world tests by the staff at Out of Spec Reviews. Check out their YouTube page. They run various EVs at 70 mph on the highway until they get to 0% charge and show the results.
