So i said goodbye to the Macan Turbo and got a Mercedes G580. For me personally it was a driving height and position issue. I’m over 6 feet tall and felt like I was sitting on the ground in the Macan and didn’t have a comfortable place to rest my arm at my seating position. It wasn’t my favorite driving position. I much prefer the upright truck like height of the G class. I also feel like overall build quality on the G is a notable step up in most areas (minus steering wheel) vs the Porsche. To be fair prices are not the same.

During my ownership of the Macan I had a few HVAC issues that took a couple weeks to address also some quality control issues with wheel caps becoming discolored/ clearcoat cracking after a few months of ownership. Add to the many electrical gremlins I dealt with (cruise control abruptly stop working, several alerts coming up on multiple occasions on the drivers screen to pull over due to electrical issues, only to go away after parking etc).

The Macan turbo was my first Porsche, the experience was ok, customer service was a little up and down at the dealership I went to.
We’ve owned Benz’s before so I know what to expect, but never a G so looking forward to the experience and hoping lower maintenance issues with the electric drivetrain.

G580 has plenty of speed. Smoother ride, worse driving dynamics, quieter at low speeds, but louder at high speeds (due to wind noise). Better sound system with the Bermester, though maybe not fair to compare it to the Porsche Bose system (which was still good).

Wish future owners and current owners all the best. Appreciate the community here.

I’m with you on your frustration with the multitude of issues - and this being your first and last Porsche. Last weeks new one for me was a random diff lock failure, that resolved itself after I turned the car off for 5 minutes. I’m going back to Audi when it’s time to replace the Macan, as I don’t quite have G class budget 😆

To clarify, are you talking about the electric G-Wagon? I have yet to see one in person but the ICE versions are very common here in Los Angeles.
Correct electric G wagon. I’ve been seeing a lot more on the road as of late (likely due to last minute leases to take advantage of the ev rebate incentives). They’re hard to make out since they look identical to the gas versions. The light up grille and backpack in place of a spare tire are options so it can be optioned to look just like the gas variant or be more EV looking.

Congrats!! I realised after I ordered my macan turbo that the electric G wagon existed. Might have done a different choice if I knew…

How’s the G roar? How’s the consumption?

G-Roar does a decent job faking G63 growl. Haven’t looked closely at consumption but I’m guessing terrible. Highway looks like this thing will get 220 on a good day (city driving maybe 250). Not a good vehicle for long commutes or road trips, but that’s not what I intend to use it for.

One thing I saw in a review a couple of months ago is that in the UK it essentially requires a commercial driver’s license if you want to have someone in every seat or carry any cargo because the vehicle is so heavy.
True at the time, but I believe they've upped the limit to 4.25 tonnes now (from 3.5) which is bonkers. Our Carthago motorhome (based on the big Sprinter chassis) is 3.25 and sleeps four in comfort.

I did exactly what you did and I’m very happy with my G580. Over the course of my 2 month ownership of my Macan turbo EV I had three catastrophic failures due to system/proportion shut down in the middle of the freeway and going into neutral, cruising without being able to control. there were multitude of other issues, but by far this problem was the most serious . both dealer and Porsche itself played dumb and pretended that it’s really not that big of a deal and they have fixed it with software resets which turnedBS! so I pushed hard and finally, Porsche North America caved in and refunded my entire cost. I’ve seen similar posts here owners having experienced similar failures, so it was not one off thing in my case. It was concerning that during the handoff the Porsche rep said that it’s gonna go back into sales network to be resold and I told him this is a dangerous car with dangerous problems and should be studied to find the causes . She just smiled. Good luck with you all.

I seriously considered the AMG EV G before I chose the Macan Turbo. The range on the G was a little lower, the wind noise noticeably higher, and the acceleration not the same.
I, too, would love to hear a round-up in 3-6 months on what the goods and bads are!
