The One reason I did not get the Macan 4 and ordered the 4S

Like most of you I've been waiting to get a Macan EV since they were announced. I just turned in a Tesla Model S and I've had a 911 S, Cayenne Turbo and many others. I've had a lot of MB company cars so I'm generally fine with a 5 sec 0-60 car. I recently drove both the Macan 4 and Turbo. The Turbo was great but more than I wanted to spend. But the one thing that really surprised me with the Macan 4 was how slow it is off the line. I'm not into launch control so all I want is for it to take off the line when I need it to. The 4 has a very slow ramp up then it's fine. It's like the worst turbo lag in an ICE car. So the 4 was an instant no for me and the only reason I ordered the 4S.

Just wanted to share my experience. To me the beauty of electric car is the instant torque throughout the range and the Macan 4 is just dead off the line compared to other EVs I've driven and I don't know why.

I think for many of us that have gotten used to the quicker "off the move" start that Tesla gives you it is hard to go back. I agree that I do not need launch control but do like a bit of instant torque and it is also the reason I went with the 4S. Not sure I saved much since it still speced out at 128. I know it will be more like what has become the norm.

I take delivery of my 4S in about a week and will let you know how the acceleration off the line compares with the 4 that I test drove a few weeks ago.

It's really strange that EPA range of 4S is less than the 4. In the configurator vehicle-specific WTLP range estimation was exactly the same with same options, and the Turbo had 20 km less range. Not that strange really is it? Ignoring EPA and WTLP metrics etc Isn’t it almost universal on all EVs across the board that the “quicker” the version of the car (not including comparing rear wheel drive vs all wheel wheel drive variants) the less range it has?

Were you able to compare off the line take off of the 4 in normal vs sport vs sport plus mode and without launch control?

Were you able to compare off the line take off of the 4 in normal vs sport vs sport plus mode and without launch control?
Good question. I tried normal and Sport. I did not try launch control or Sport Plus (not sure it had Chrono).

Was the throttle response not better in sport? The 4 still has a progressive acceleration in both modes and doesn't tend to whack your head backwards which the Turbo tends to do in sport mode. It has been a while since my test drive- the normal mode in the 4 felt like ECO mode for the initial part of the acceleration. Would be interested to know how the 4S performs as well.

My GTS was definitely strong enough for the take off the line. Let's see if Macan 4 will have the same power as those diagrams are showing...

EV has changed the expectations of what acceleration is/should be like. Maybe it broke us (me) in that sense.

When I test drove the Macan GTS earlier this year, I did not love it. Not the interior, not the speed, not the acceleration. The engine sounded nice however.
When my partner test drove the GTS, she asked the SA “why is it so slow?” - to which he was a little uneasy.

She’s been used to EV doing 0-60 in 4 seconds for the past few years, now anything else is slow.
And she’s driven Corvettes and 911s and all sorts of fun cars we rent when away…

More recently, we went to PEC ATL and she had a blast autoX a 718 and 911, as well as lapping them. She loved the handling and everything about them… but was underwhelmed by acceleration.

All this to say: once one gets used to (fast) EV - not looking at you Nissan Leaf -, all the ICE cars that were traditionally considered quick feel sluggish.

I totally agree. And here is the answer which i love : She’s been used to EV doing 0-60 in 4 seconds for the past few years, now anything else is slow :)

True, sort of. But with that logic, wouldn’t the Turbo have less range than the 4S?

Right which is why I'm saying ignoring EPA and/or WLTP since those really are just estimates and not real world range anyways (granted i know that's difficult).

I suppose what i mean is a person's expectations ought to be that the faster version has less range than the slower version (if battery is the same etc. but power output is different).

So for example i wouldn't be "surprised" that the 4S has less range than a 4. In fact I would expect it it too.

Again not coming from anything scientific or anything just saying, could be wrong. :p

Yea totally get that and agree with that expectation. That’s why I find the turbo #s odd considering the power difference.
