I have an embarrassingly simple question that I have not been able to answer through a general online search. Please refrain from laughing at me. ;-) When I first got my Macan I thought the vroom-vroom sound was something you heard only inside the car. I've since learned that it also "plays" outside. So just where in/on the car does the outside sound emanate from? Thanks for your help.

There is a speaker under the car that plays the sound. On the Taycan it is located between the rear bumper and air suspension tank. It is hidden by the underbody panels so you cannot see it. I don't have it on the Macan so cannot say where it is and couldn't find a picture of it.

Google says it’s behind the front bumper.

The Porsche Macan Electric's Sport Sound is produced by two dedicated exterior speakers located in the front bumper, near the frunk, in addition to the entire internal entertainment sound system. An intelligent control algorithm adjusts the sound based on the driving situation, speed, and motor torque for an emotive and Macan-specific audio experience.

I don't have the electric sport sound on my 4S. When I picked up the car, the dealer drove the car to where I was standing and it seemed to have a significant artificial "sport sound" that I could plainly hear. I told the dealer that I didn't spec the sport sound and was surprised it was included. He said that what I heard was not the sport sound but a sound produced by speakers toward the front of car that was included in US specs because it is required that electric cars make noise when traveling at low speeds to warn pedestrians. I haven't seen this mentioned before and I'm wondering if he made this explanation up.

That’s called AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) or PWS (Pedestrian Warning System).
It is what the dealer said and it’s a safety feature/mandatory requirement in the EU up to 20 km/h and in the US up to 30 km/h for all EVs/hybrids since ~2019/2020 same as ESP for example.
It comes standard nobody can charge you for it not even Porsche😁

The Sport Sounds is great, but I had no idea it played sounds on the outside! I have it on my 2025 Macan 4S and coming from my two silent EVs prior I thought it would be a joke, but I actually love it. The only time I don't have it on is on the highway, when it's just a droning hum. What I really want to know is, how do I rev my Porsche when sitting at a red light??!! ;-)

Does the car sound different to pedestrians with the sport sound option turned on vs. off and vs. another car that doesn’t have the option?

Well the AVAS is required by law to change its pitch & tone so pedestrians can judge your speed, if you are accelerating, slowing down, barely moving, etc.
I don’t have Sports Sound but I imagine when turned on the effect will be many times louder with a more aggressive sound to let pedestrians know you didn’t skimp on options😁
