My active contracts (UK base) show Porsche Connect running until 2034 (10 years), and the 5GB Data Pass running until 2028 (4 years)

Thanks. I visit a Taycan forum and there are many complaints about having to pay after 3 years and in previous cars the service was chargeable after 3 years too.

I searched on here for a thread about this but couldn’t find one. Apologies if I missed one.

I have seen on other forums complaints about Porsche charging $ 300 / year for Porsche Connect after 3 years. My reading of this is that (perhaps only in the UK) that this free for 10 years. Is this correct and unique to the Macan EV rather than the Taycan ?

UK Macan EV - ‘free’ is buried in an over-priced car and I suspect will be made available on J1.2 Taycans before too long (for the same reasons).

It's consistent with information provided by Porsche Netherlands: 10 years of free use for the Macan, only 3 years for the Taycan.

I was curious about: "why does it have 10 years for free?" My assumption was that the Macan was the first Porsche to need the Porsche Connect service to operate the car.

For example, the only way that I know how (for certain) to precondition the battery for charging is to use Porsche Navigation to plan a route to a charging station. Porsche Navigation is handled by an AWS style cloud system. Does preconditioning not work without Porsche Connect?

;)

Pre-heat / condition / climate can be programmed via the PCM.

Preconditioning of the battery requires Porsche Charging Planner which is likely part of Porsche Connect services.

10 years is plenty. Battery warranty is only 8 years, and it’s ~$30k to replace that out of warranty

what is Porsche Connect without the data Pass?

I don't think Connect will work at all without the data Pass. and my assumption is that they feel you wont even own the car after 10 yrs...

Is the data pass not for apps that you install rather than standard car functionality which comes with an active Porsche Connect subscription?

Porsche Connect does not use data pass - it uses its own inbuilt sim. Data pass is a separate sim with an allowance (in the UK) of 5gb / month and the downloaded apps like Spotify use it and it also provides a WiFi hotspot for passengers to use. You could use the same Apps in CarPlay and use your phones data rather than pay (after 4 years) for Data Pass. I don’t know if the data pass sim provides better coverage than a phone in the charger tray with the cover shut.

The Porsche Data Pass is an add-on to your Porsche Connect package. Each month you’ll receive 5GB of data to use with the App Center, third-party apps, connected media and internet access via wi-< hotspot, allowing you to enjoy high-speed connectivity for your favourite audio and video streaming.

interesting, i woulda thought all the data went over 1 connection. Namely the verizon/data pass.

I may be wrong, but can't see how 1 sim could be used for both Connect & Data Pass. Data Pass has a limit of 5gb per month for your personal use and if exceeded then access is denied. If the sim is 'barred' for exceeding the limit how would the car continue to download the data OTA for say live traffic. Apparently, with Data Pass you can check the remaining monthly allowance in the My Porsche app so that seems to indicate it is a stand alone account.
The main thing is though, in the UK we don't have to concern ourselves about it as 4 years is free and configured whether you use it or not.
