Windshield wipers scuffing hood / PPF when lifted

I lifted my windshield wipers to clean the windshield and later realized that there isn't enough clearance to lift the wipers without them resting against the edge of the hood. This happened with the wiper on the driver side. In my case, this tore up the edge of the PPF and I had to take it back into the PPF shop to fix it (by cutting off the edge of the PPF so was torn up).

Has anyone else had this issue without enough clearance for the wiper? Is there some way to lift the wipers to avoid this issue?

Thanks - when it says push the wiper lever down, does that refer to the full stalk?
