Trip summary: 1,500 miles, no problems. It’s so much fun to drive on a long road trip: fast, safe, quiet, comfortable, great tech, fun. And, after the Bose speakers broke in the sound was great.
Our car is a Macan 4, 22 inch wheels.
We used the Porsche charge planner and it is exceptionally good. Most of these tools are “guesstimates” and can’t be relied on; this tool is precise. One example, we were driving from San Diego to Palm Springs and it took into account the route’s drastic elevation changes when determining the charge plan. It also took into account the impact of our bikes on the range. Its predicted state of charge was very accurate and I don’t know how it could be that precise!
Charging was easy and fast. Our fastest rate was 290 kw. We achieved the claimed 20 minute charge time every time but once. The 350 KW EA chargers were everywhere we needed them to be. It will be nice when we have access to the Tesla and Rivian networks as EA is very popular. We never had to wait, but others did.
The impact of two heavy e-bikes wasn’t bad. I estimate it shaved 15% off the range. We typically get 320 miles in San Francisco without bikes on the car. This trip was more likely ke 280 miles. We did have a long run where rang went down to 220 miles but we were going 80 mph for over 200 miles (with bikes).
We had to help a very blonde, Russian woman who had just received her Macan a few hours earlier. She was at a charge station without a clue. The dealer let her go without even MyPorsche on her phone. So, I got it downloaded and also learned her dealer didn’t have a plug and charge certificate set up for her either. I knew the work around to get the charger working using the app and we eventually got power into her car. Made me appreciate Porsche SF. Her dealer should be shot.
When we stopped to charge on the way home, we sat in a Taco Bell to wait. While looking out the window, I saw two very black sports cars pull up next to ours at the charger. One of the Germanic drivers got out and started taking pictures of our car. He was so excited. Then I tried to identify the make and model of his car as it was beautiful and I knew of no such car on the market (sleak, sassy, convertible). We went out to the charger to check it out. It was a camouflaged Boxster EV. Actually, there were 4 of them. I want one!
So, great trip, great car.
