Scheduled charging issues….no options now work

Tomorrow 13th December my Macan 4 is back into the dealer, having been there for two weeks (two visits) since picking it up on 31st October.

This time, since 29th November (and an OTA update that day) the car will not charge other than directly. A scheduled charge from the wall charger gives a ‘cannot charge‘ error (worked for nearly a month) and using the departure time and setting charging period on the car results in the car polling on and off charging whilst what sounds like the air suspension compressor running and then releasing excess pressure and at one stage giving a high voltage system fault (a week in garage and no change) ……. ‘charging rate‘ whilst polling circa 1kW Max; direct charging 6 to 7 kW.

Nothing changed on wall charger and works consistently with Skoda Enyaq and my previous car, Audi Q8 55 etron.

Car back to dealer tomorrow……….. anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi, fellow Cheshire 4S owner here - I don’t use the cars own scheduler as I have the Octopus Intelligent tariff that controls the charger instead, but there are problems with this as well.

As you say if I direct charge it works fine, but if I plug my home charger (Zappi) in, because it is paused the car and charger negotiate and say they are connected but as the charger is paused waiting for low tariff 1 minute later the car throws an error flashes the light next to the charge port red, unlocks the cable, puts and error on the dashboard and I get an app message to say charging error.

If I don’t touch it and leave the car locked and cable in, despite the car saying ‘charging plug not inserted’ (my Zappi says EV connected) and when my charger finally starts charging, the car locks the cable and charges ok and it will stop and start as per the charger schedule throwing an error each time it pauses - I just have to accept that the cable is unlocked when I leave it overnight but it does eventually charge ok.

Never seen this behaviour on any of my previous EV’s or my Cayenne hybrid. With a direct charger as long as it starts charging within 1 minute it works fine but if the charger is paused you get an error.

Be very interested to hear what your dealer finds.

My charger is a Pod Point which could schedule charges on my previous Audi Q8 55 Etron but my partners Skoda Enyaq goes refuses and gives an error but fine if we use cars timer.

small 1£ bet - Porsche will blame your EV Charger - called an EVSE…they will tell you to use the Porsche charger…that's my bet.

one of the things about Porsche and their EV game (and in particular their EVSE game) is that they don't seem to take interoperability seriously or even seem to care. EV's and EVSE's are not supposed to be vendor/vehicle specific - both should and must work with a wide range of the other…

when working with PCNA regarding the now numerous documented problems with the PMC+/PMCC in North America - Porsche simply did not care, or show any interest in being part of the larger EV eco-systems (their vehicle functioning with other EVSE's or their EVSE being a suitable charger for non-Porsche EV's)

I'll be very interested in their response to this problem…but if you were in North America I'd have a bit more certainty about the outcome…we'll see.

For a month I was charging using PodPoint scheduling with no problem and can still charge directly (but am not going to wait until midnight to plug the car in and get up before 05:00 to make sure I get night time tariff ). Can you charge directly?

When I’ve been trying to schedule charging using the cars scheduler I’ve always programmed sitting in the car but have not tried the App charging scheduling option which I now, after the car in at the dealers, see looks slightly different than the car menu.

My loan car from the dealer is a Taycan. Will be a while before I need to charge as car provided at 100% but will let you know if it works ok.

part of Porsche's "lack of EV'ness" is their apparently lack of engagement on greater EV issues beyond stuff that can be addressed by local service tech's - Porsche mostly nails the normal car stuff, but software and compatibility issue with heir provided infrastructure or their vehicle interacting with infrastructure seems to bewilder them…

we'll see how this goes - but if you were in North America I'd be pretty confident in the outcome.

I wonder whether, if the dealer who sold to you knew you had a charger, there is an mis-selling argument here. My PodPoint was the charger offered by Audi when I got my Q8 so at least all in VW group.

At the moment my dealer is interested as with the the car scheduling the charging I’ve had a high voltage system fault message and the car sounds like air suspension compressor is running in cycles as car tries to charge…. Workshop manager was very clear that no systems should be running during charging and he is the one looking at the car. If I get any news I’ll let people know.

direct charging set the ‘at home‘ on PodPoint to Manual. The PodPoint light should be solid blue. Plug cable into car and it should charge.

I just spoke with PodPoint technical support (02072474114) and essentially they are not aware of any issues with the Macan yet. But he said there are a number of VW group vehicles that have scheduling problems. If you’ve not spoken to them may be worth a try….. if nothing else it logs a possible issue with them.

RichardM, thank for the info, recently lost husband and he took care of all this sort of thing. So I feel I am floundering. I did ring Podpoint and was Left on hold for half and hour. Gave up. re Podpoint app There is no Macan ev to choose so I picked the taycan.

Hi, I phoned PodPoint after 17:00 took 3mins on their after hours service.

I specifically asked about the vehicle selection and was told it should not make a lot of difference, if vehicle not there pick nearest one. Informed the guy that the Taycan is potentially a different platform as the Macan is on the new 800V platform for VW group. I did try Taycan myself didn’t help so put back to Audi Q8 Etron which isn’t any better but our Skoda happily charges (didn’t try Skoda on the Taycan setting).

The direct charging would give an option if it works.

I shouldn’t have to do the direct charging BUT it will give me something to tell Porsche about. it Must be a porsche problem as my Hyundai charged perfectly up until the Macan arrived.
